Yates Stirling,  A United States Midshipman in China (1909)

“ The Americans were on the point of congratulating themselves upon having passed the forts in safety, when a flash of flame sprang from the darkness of the hill forts and the screech of a shell sounded menacingly in their ears.

Yates Stirling,  A United States Midshipman in the Philippines (1910)

“ Phil realized only too vividly that something must be done and quickly. A false move would condemn them all. Once those wild men, steeped in the blood of the innocent, had commenced, even the power of their leader could not stop them.

The girl’s words were unintelligible to the Americans, but to the advancing natives they were like a flash of lightning from out of a clear sky.

Yates Stirling,  A United States Midshipman Afloat (1908)

“ The horrified soldiers were deserting, running away from the avalanche sweeping upon them.

The Colt guns were stilled, the last soldier had deserted; the Americans were alone in the trench except for the dead and those too badly wounded to escape from the terrifying sound of the advancing army.
The silence of their enemy behind the intrenchments on La Mesa sent a thrill of terror through the advancing hundreds.
