The young Lady Glastonbury was presented to her Sovereign and to Society. The Sovereign admired her and Society received her very cordially, partly because it liked her husband and partly because it wanted so much to find out what he could have seen in her, and also whether she ate peas with her knife, and ate asparagus with—I forget whether it was fingers or forks that were wrong that year.
It had leaked out, as these secret horrors will, that her father was a farmer; not just a rich man who keeps a farm to spend money on, as other men keep less respectable objects, but a working farmer.
