When vision is no longer available, instruments must be relied upon to eliminate disorientation. Rotation through many degrees for an extended period of time, twenty seconds or more, can give a false impression of straight flight due to the actions of the semicircular canals in the inner ear. Movement of the head during the rotation will result in the impression of a violent pitch up or down, dependent on the direction of rotation with relation to the direction of head movement.

On the basis of the times ascribed to the events shown on the PAA 212 flight recorder readout, PAA 212 started a left turn to the assigned heading of 360 degrees at 1826:00. The results of this turn would be to produce even more of an apparent collision track than before. After the turn to 170 degrees the captain of EAL 663 would have had a total of 23 seconds available to him in which to (I) locate the other aircraft, (2) assess the degree of threat, (3) initiate an avoidance maneuver, and (4) complete the avoidance maneuver.
