The plane must have entered a torrential downpour of rain at the time of, or immediately following, the flash of lightning in its vicinity, and if the cockpit windows had been smashed in, the pilots might have been subjected not only to the violent impact of flying pieces of glass but also to a withering stream of water striking them with all the force of the airplane's speed through the air of 150 miles an hour and upwards.

As to whether or not the aircraft can be recovered to level flight, the basic considerations are dive angle and altitude, if the former is too great and the latter too small, recovery is obviously an unattainable goal. More subtle and difficult to assess, but greatly affecting the seriousness of angle and altitude, are pilot response times, his use of reverse thrust, whether he attempts to retrim and perhaps the most important of all, how much load he is willing or able to place on the airframe in the pullout.

Ice may form under varying weather conditions at temperatures hovering around the freezing point or below, or in any cloud the temperature of which is at or below freezing, and in precipitation below clouds even though no precipitation is evident on the surface of the ground. The rate of accumulation of ice is also dependent upon such factors as the size of the aircraft, its speed, the length of time in the icing condition, the rate of accumulation, the size, temperature and rate of descent of the water droplet and the angle at which it strikes the aircraft surfaces.
