Portrait of Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell,  The Life of Charlotte Brontë — Volume 1

“ I have heard her allude to an unfortunate cook, who used at times to spoil the porridge, but who, she said, was soon dismissed.”
The recollections left of the four Brontë sisters at this period of their lives, on the minds of those who associated with them, are not very distinct. Portrait of A. Mary F. Robinson A. Mary F. Robinson,  Emily Brontë (1883)

“ Her education was as home-made as her gowns, not such as would give distinction to a governess; and a governess Emily would have to be. She was almost violent in her dislike of strangers. The first time that Ellen stayed at Haworth, Charlotte was ill one day and could not go out with her friend. ”

It has sometimes been implied that the portrait drawn by Mrs. Gaskell was far too sombre, that there are passages in Charlotte’s letters which show that ofttimes her heart was merry and her life sufficiently cheerful. That there were long periods of gaiety for all the three sisters, surely no one ever doubted. To few people, fortunately, is it given to have lives wholly without happiness.
