Daughter of Zion

Definition and stakes

Portrait of Brigham Young Brigham Young,  Journal of Discourses — Volume 10…

“ When they have sent their friends to Zion, they feel a greater interest in Zion than they ever did; for they have somebody there to meet, probably a son, a daughter, a father, a mother, or some friend who has preceded them to Zion, and it is astonishing the effect the departure of such a relative or friend has had on them; they feel more stimulated and encouraged, and look forward to going to Zion with feelings they did not have before. ”

Bible (1917)

“ She dwelleth among the nations, She findeth no rest; All her pursuers overtook her Within the straits. ד4The ways of Zion do mourn, Because none come to the solemn assembly; All her gates are desolate, Her priests sigh; Her virgins are afflicted, And she herself is in bitterness. ה5Her adversaries are become the head, Her enemies are at ease; For the Lord hath afflicted her For the multitude of her transgressions; Her young children are gone into captivity Before the adversary. ו6And gone is from the daughter of Zion All her splendour ”

Portrait of Franz Delitzsch Franz Delitzsch,  Biblical commentary the Old Testament… (1892)

“ The daughter of Zion (Zion itself) is the church in its childlike, bride-like, and conjugal relation to Jahve. In the gates of the daughter of Zion is equivalent to: before all God's people, Psa 116:14. For the gates are the places of public resort and business. At this period the Old Testament mind knew nothing of the songs of praise of the redeemed in heaven. On the other side of the grave is the silence of death. If the church desires to praise God, it must continue in life and not die. ”
