Yahweh

“ Let him come near to me. 50:9 Behold, the Lord Yahweh will help me; who is he who shall condemn me? Behold, all they shall wax old as a garment, the moth shall eat them up. 50:10 Who is among you who fears Yahweh, who obeys the voice of his servant? He who walks in darkness, and has no light, let him trust in the name of Yahweh, and rely on his God. 50:11 Behold, all you who kindle a fire, who gird yourselves about with firebrands; walk you in the flame of your fire, and among the brands that you have kindled. ”

“ Said Jacob to Jesus: “But, Rabbi, Moses and the olden prophets tell us that Yahweh is a jealous God, a God of great wrath and fierce anger. The prophets say he hates evildoers and takes vengeance on those who obey not his law. You and your disciples teach us that God is a kind and compassionate Father who so loves all men that he would welcome them into this new kingdom of heaven, which you proclaim is so near at hand.” ”

“ Yahweh avenges and is full of wrath. Yahweh takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he maintains wrath against his enemies. 3 Yahweh is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. Yahweh has his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. 4 He rebukes the sea, and makes it dry, and dries up all the rivers. Bashan languishes, and Carmel; and the flower of Lebanon languishes. 5 The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, yes, the world, and all who dwell in it. ”

“ Chapter 51
1 Listen to me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek Yahweh: look to the rock whence you were cut, and to the hold of the pit whence you were dug. 2 Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who bore you; for when he was but one I called him, and I blessed him, and made him many. 3 For Yahweh has comforted Zion; he has comforted all her waste places, and has made her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of Yahweh; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. ”

“ Yahweh our righteousness. 23:7 Therefore, behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that they shall no more say, As Yahweh lives, who brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; 23:8 but, As Yahweh lives, who brought up and who led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all the countries where I had driven them. They shall dwell in their own land. 23:9 Concerning the prophets. My heart within me is broken, all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine has overcome, because of Yahweh, and because of his holy words. ”

“ Every thing that crawls on the earth, in their families, exited the ark.
20 And Noaḥ built an altar for Yahweh. And he took from every pure beast, and from every pure bird, and raised it in offer on the altar. 21 And Yahweh smelled the soothing scent, and in his heart he thought: "No more will I curse the ground over mankind, just because the products of man's heart are evil from adolescence. And I will not go on to strike down all life, as I have done. 22 Onward, all the days of the earth: seeding and reaping, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and night and day, will not arrest." ”

“ His conception of Yahweh shows a mingling of the high and the low. On the one hand, he regards him as supreme in power, controlling the destinies of Babylonia and Egypt as well as those of Israel, and as inflexibly just in dealing with ordinary offences against morality. But he conceives of him, on the other hand, as limited locally and morally—as having his special abode in. the Jerusalem temple, or elsewhere in the midst of the Israelite people, and as dealing with other nations solely in the interests of Israel. ”

“ Worship him, all you gods! 97:8 Zion heard and was glad. The daughters of Judah rejoiced, because of your judgments, Yahweh. 97:9 For you, Yahweh, are most high above all the earth. You are exalted far above all gods. 97:10 You who love Yahweh, hate evil. He preserves the souls of his saints. He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked. 97:11 Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. ”

“ All his work is done in faithfulness. 33:5 He loves righteousness and justice. The earth is full of the loving kindness of Yahweh. 33:6 By Yahweh's word, the heavens were made; all their army by the breath of his mouth. 33:7 He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap. He lays up the deeps in storehouses. 33:8 Let all the earth fear Yahweh. Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 33:9 For he spoke, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood firm. 33:10 Yahweh brings the counsel of the nations to nothing. He makes the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect. ”

“ Break out into singing, you mountains, O forest, all of your trees, for Yahweh has redeemed Jacob, and will glorify himself in Israel. 44:24 Thus says Yahweh, your Redeemer, and he who formed you from the womb: "I am Yahweh, who makes all things; who alone stretches out the heavens; who spreads out the earth by myself; 44:25 who frustrates the signs of the liars, and makes diviners mad; who turns wise men backward, and makes their knowledge foolish; 44:26 who confirms the word of his servant, and performs the counsel of his messengers ”

“ Jehovah, or Yahweh, was the name of this God, and the religious watchword was, "Jehovah, the God of Israel; Israel the people {172} of Jehovah." Now archeology has shown the name "Yahweh" to have been used as a divine name long before the time of the exodus; but archæology has also shown that the conception of the nature and character of Yahweh held by the religious leaders of the Hebrews from the time of Moses on is peculiar to them. ”

“ Yahweh, the God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven, or on earth; you who keep covenant and loving kindness with your servants, who walk before you with all their heart; 15who have kept with your servant David my father that which you promised him: yes, you spoke with your mouth, and have fulfilled it with your hand, as it is this day. ”

“ Do my prophets no harm. 16:23 Sing to Yahweh, all the earth! Display his salvation from day to day. 16:24 Declare his glory among the nations, and his marvelous works among all the peoples. 16:25 For great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised. He also is to be feared above all gods. 16:26 For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but Yahweh made the heavens. 16:27 Honor and majesty are before him. Strength and gladness are in his place. 16:28 Ascribe to Yahweh, you relatives of the peoples, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength! ”

“ Yahweh came from Sinai, And rose from Seir to them. He shone forth from Mount Paran. He came from the ten thousands of holy ones. At his right hand was a fiery law for them. 33:3 Yes, he loves the people. All his saints are in your hand. They sat down at your feet; Everyone shall receive of your words. 33:4 Moses commanded us a law, An inheritance for the assembly of Jacob. 33:5 He was king in Jeshurun, When the heads of the people were gathered, All the tribes of Israel together. 33:6 Let Reuben live, and not die; Nor let his men be few. ”

“ He refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning. Behold, he goes out to the water; and you shall stand by the river's bank to meet him; and the rod which was turned to a serpent you shall take in your hand. 16 You shall tell him, 'Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, "Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness:" and behold, until now you haven't listened. 17 Thus says Yahweh, "In this you shall know that I am Yahweh. ”

“ He answered him, Go up and prosper; and Yahweh will deliver it into the hand of the king. 22:16 The king said to him, How many times shall I adjure you that you speak to me nothing but the truth in the name of Yahweh? 22:17 He said, I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd: and Yahweh said, These have no master; let them return every man to his house in peace. 22:18 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, Didn't I tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil? ”

“ I didn't say to the seed of Jacob, Seek you me in vain: I, Yahweh, speak righteousness, I declare things that are right. 20 Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you who have escaped from the nations: they have no knowledge who carry the wood of their engraved image, and pray to a god that can't save. ”

“ Yahweh, the abiding one, the permanent one, who, unlike man, is not to-morrow a thing of the past, but one that endures forever, that {218} lives and labors for all eternity above the broad, resplendent, law-bound canopy of the stars—it was this Yahweh that constituted the primordial patrimony of those Canaanite tribes from which centuries afterward the twelve tribes of Israel sprang. ”

“ Yahweh himself is not taken away: he remains the priceless possession, the chief glory of Israel. It is only the name that is shown to be widespread. And the name matters little. The great question is, What does this name convey? What is its theological content? The name came to Israel from the outside; but into that vessel a long line of prophets from Moses onward poured such a flood of attributes as never a priest in all western Asia from Babylonia to the sea ever dreamed of in his highest moments of spiritual insight. ”

“ He remembers that we are dust. 103:15 As for man, his days are like grass. As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. 103:16 For the wind passes over it, and it is gone. Its place remembers it no more. 103:17 But Yahweh's loving kindness is from everlasting to everlasting with those who fear him, his righteousness to children's children; 103:18 to those who keep his covenant, to those who remember to obey his precepts. 103:19 Yahweh has established his throne in the heavens. His kingdom rules over all. ”

“ The very memory of the cities which you have overthrown has perished. 9:7 But Yahweh reigns forever. He has prepared his throne for judgment. 9:8 He will judge the world in righteousness. He will administer judgment to the peoples in uprightness. 9:9 Yahweh will also be a high tower for the oppressed; a high tower in times of trouble. 9:10 Those who know your name will put their trust in you, for you, Yahweh, have not forsaken those who seek you. 9:11 Sing praises to Yahweh, who dwells in Zion, and declare among the people what he has done. ”

“ From heaven, Yahweh saw the earth; 102:20 to hear the groans of the prisoner; to free those who are condemned to death; 102:21 that men may declare the name of Yahweh in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem; 102:22 when the peoples are gathered together, the kingdoms, to serve Yahweh. 102:23 He weakened my strength along the course. He shortened my days. 102:24 I said, "My God, don't take me away in the midst of my days. Your years are throughout all generations. 102:25 Of old, you laid the foundation of the earth. The heavens are the work of your hands. ”

“ They came out of all the cities of Judah to seek Yahweh. 5Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of Yahweh, before the new court; 6and he said, “Yahweh, the God of our fathers, aren’t you God in heaven? Aren’t you ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in your hand, so that no one is able to withstand you. 7Didn’t you, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it to the seed of Abraham your friend forever? ”

“ Again, the conception of Yahweh suffered modification. In the desert he was worshipped as an atmospheric deity, who manifested himself in thunder and lightning, whose abode was in the sky, whose sanctuary was on the mountain summit of Horeb-Sinai, and whose movable palladium was the ark of the covenant. But when the nomadic clans of Israel came to occupy the settled abodes of the agricultural Canaanites who had a stake in the soil which they cultivated, these conditions evidently reacted on their religion. ”

“ Then Yahweh said to me,
"The end has come on my people Israel. I will not again pass by them any more. 8:3 The songs of the temple will be wailings in that day," says the Lord Yahweh. "The dead bodies will be many. In every place they will throw them out with silence. 8:4 Hear this, you who desire to swallow up the needy, and cause the poor of the land to fail, 8:5 Saying, 'When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may market wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel large, and dealing falsely with balances of deceit ”

“ Thus saith Yahweh—
is simply to invoke the assistance of the eye to give to that formula the dominating force over the announcement which follows which by the intention of the prophet it should naturally have. And so again there are cases in the Pentateuch and in the Prophets in which the oft-recurring formula, "As Yahweh commanded Moses," [13] or "Declareth Yahweh," [14] can be more becomingly appended, and with better effect, as a line by itself drawn towards the right hand, after the manner of a signature, than in any other way. 3. ”

“ He continually multiplies lies and desolation. They make a covenant with Assyria, and oil is carried into Egypt. 12:2 Yahweh also has a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his deeds he will repay him. 12:3 In the womb he took his brother by the heel; and in his manhood he contended with God. 12:4 Indeed, he struggled with the angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication to him. He found him at Bethel, and there he spoke with us, 12:5 even Yahweh, the God of Armies; Yahweh is his name of renown! ”
