Portrait of Elinor Mordaunt Elinor Mordaunt,  On the Wallaby Through Victoria

“ Still farther on the line runs right up into Gippsland, the black, luscious soil of which grows the finest grass in Victoria, a paradise of a place, where drought is hardly known—a district showing, indeed, only one blot on its scutcheon, and that—shared by almost every other dairying centre, and the work of man and not of Nature, who has, indeed, been bountiful to Gippsland—the terrible overworking of the children by their parents, in the greed for quick gain and dislike of paying out any money in wages, which is such a crying disgrace to the country. ”

Portrait of James George Frazer James George Frazer,  Folk-Lore (1909)

“ The longed-for time came, or seemed to come, at last when he retired from the public service of Victoria in 1901. He now settled down to the quiet life of a student in his picturesque home at Metung, on the shore of the Gippsland Lakes. Gippsland is a pleasant and a beautiful country, with a climate in the lowlands like that of Italy. The orange grows well there; the mountains are high and snow-capped for months together ”

Portrait of Robert Brough Smyth Robert Brough Smyth,  The Aborigines of Victoria/Volume 1 (1878)

“ The tribes on the other side are styled Brajerak, which means men who are to be feared. The word is formed from Bra, a man, and jer-ah, to fear. Mr. Bulmer supposes that the blacks meant to imply that the people beyond the great range were strangers, and not safe to deal with. He adds that it is very difficult to form an estimate of the total number of Aborigines in Gippsland, but he thinks that, from present appearances, they never could have numbered more than 1,000, or at most 1,500. The area of Gippsland is, roughly, 10,000,000 acres ”
