“ Hughes answered. He turned toward me and I was startled by the coldness in his eyes. “Do you know, Inspector,” he went on, “that this American came to London with a letter of introduction to the captain—a letter from the captain’s cousin, one Archibald Enwright? And do you know that Fraser-Freer had no cousin of that name?”
“No!” said Bray.
“It happens to be the truth,” said Hughes. “The American has confessed as much to me.”
“Then,” said Bray to me, and his little blinking eyes were on me with a narrow calculating glance that sent the shivers up and down my spine, “you are under arrest. ”

It is a satisfaction, even though it is not a delight, to come in contact with a mind like Mr. Hughes'; it is so definite, so hard and firm and palpable. Hughes, who had probably never seen Mullen in this vein before, looked first at him and then at me in astonishment.
“Stow your jaw!” I said shortly. “If you’re going to pay me for the job, pay me and let me go!”
“Certainly, certainly, my dear fellow,” replied Mullen, smiling. “Yes, you and I have a little account to settle, haven’t we? I’ll pay you, by all means. I always do pay my debts, and with interest. First, about the hulk.” ”

“ Hughes. "Had we told one, we might as well have told all. I and Sophia knew that we could keep our own counsel; but we could not answer beyond ourselves—not even for Mary."
"Could you not trust her?"
"Trust her!" echoed Mr. Hughes. "Her tongue was like a sieve: it let out everything. ”

“ Hughes brooded only over how soon he could break out into song again.
"Yer damn fool! If Paddy ain't going somewhere, what's his horse saddled up for?"
"Well,s'pose he is?" laughed Hughes. "Why yer blistering idiot, he's going to Mount Madden, what do we care?"
"Like the devil he cares a damn, about Mound Madden!"
"Oh to hell with Paddy, let's have another drink!" broke in Isaac Brown.
"Right O!" chimed in Ahlers, reaching for the whiskey.
"Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay!" began Hughes again. ”

“ I was sold from them when a mere lad." "Well," said he, "if you have a brother he is in Cleveland. There is a fellow there who is chief cook at the Forest City Hotel who looks just like you." I grew eager at these words, and put the same question to him that I did to the man on the steamer when I was sailing: "Has he one fore-finger cut off?" He laughed and answered: "Well, I don't know, Hughes, about that; but I do know this: His name is Billy and he resembles you very much. I'll tell you what I'll do, when I go back to Cleveland on my next trip I'll look and see if that fore-finger is off." ”

“ A day or two later they were formally received in Parliament Buildings and each presented with £500.
"The world is richer and better for what you have done," Mr. Hughes told them, and he spoke the truth. Their achievement was like the attempts to ascend Mount Everest—utterly useless in any prosaic sense, but a vindication of the vigour and daring of the human spirit. ”

“ HUGHES, HUGH (1790?–1863) , artist, born at Pwllygwichiad, near Llandudno, son of Thomas Hughes, by Jane, his wife, was baptised at Llandudno, according to the parish register, 20 Feb. 1790. He lost his parents in childhood, and was educated by his maternal grandfather, Hugh Williams of Meddiant Farm, Llansantffraid Glan Conwy, Denbighshire. “ I said, looking round approvingly after I had seated myself. “If one doesn’t mind a lonely life (it is lonely I suppose?) , one might do worse than turn hulk-keeper.”
Hughes grunted by way of reply, but whether this was to be taken as signifying acquiescence or dissent I was unable to say, his face being at the moment hidden in a corner locker, whence he presently emerged with a bottle of Old Tom and a glass. ”

“ Hughes began to fumble among the papers on the table beside him for his spectacles, and then for the scattered sheets of his manuscript. “Yes, there is a special obligation upon the friends of social reform to a life of common-sense. I have regarded the matter from rather a novel standpoint, and I think you will be interested.”
The old man read on and on. At last Ray heard the latch of the street door click, and the sound of the opening and then the shutting of the door. ”

“ He pulled up Shiraz, for he was playing "back," to guard the goal. Powell on Polaris was half-back, and Macnamara and Hughes on Corks and Kittiwynk were forwards.
