“ The escarpments along the east coast are far more elevated than those on the opposite side.
It is sometimes asserted that the Nile traverses Lake Albert without mingling with the surrounding waters. But recent inquiry has shown that such is not the case. But when the stream is colder it descends to the lower depths of the lacustrine cavity, where it replaces the lighter fluid.

Portrait of Joseph A. Altsheler Joseph A. Altsheler,  The Last of the Chiefs: A Story of the Great Sioux War

“ He had the lake, an immense and beautiful blue mirror, on his right and the mountains on his left, but the space between was now nearly two miles in width, sown thickly in spots with pine and cedar, ash and aspen, and in other places quite open. In the latter the grass was green despite the lateness of the season, and Albert surmised that good grazing could be found there all through the winter, even under the snow. Game must be plentiful there, too. ”
