Eleanor Waring Burnham,  Justin Morgan, founder of his race

“ Editor American Horse Breeder:—I am an old man, eighty-three, this month, and seeing an article in your last in praise of the Morgan Horse, I want to add a word of gratitude for their noble service done me as a stage-proprietor on the Fourth New Hampshire Town-pike; as livery man and farmer.... For endurance, intelligence and as trappy drivers, the Morgans have no equals. To handle six or eight horses on a stage-coach over hills—without accident—looks to me wonderful now, for brakes were not known in those days. ”

“ Many of the Morgan horses have the steep rump and heavy breast and neck, which indicate a Norman cross on the side of their dams. These have been largely imparted through the French horse in the adjoining Canadian settlements, but none of these are said to have characterized the founder of the race.
They are of medium size, from 131⁄2 to 15 hands high; with a well-formed head and neck; high withers; deep chest; round body; short back; long quarters; broad flat legs; moderately small feet; long wavy mane and tail; presenting altogether the beau ideal of the road horse.

“ That there is a revival of Morgan breeding is an excellent thing for the country, for the Morgan is about the best all-round, everyday, 76general utility horse that this country has had and probably as good as any type in the world.
The renascence of the Morgan horse is due to the horse shows, which have become deservedly popular in many parts of the United States. There are those who speak of the horse shows rather contemptuously as society fads in which the horses exhibited are of secondary importance and interest.
