University of Oregon

Definition and stakes

Oregon Historical Society,  Oregon Historical Quarterly (1919)

“ No more fitting place than the campus of the University of Oregon could be found for the memorial. Here amid these beautiful surroundings, in this institution of learning, acting as an inspiration to Oregon's young manhood and womanhood, this pioneer in bronze will find a hospitable home in the land he loved so well. I am happy in the thought that I have had the opportunity thus to show my love and admiration for those whose life was largely spent in a work whose greatness and value will be better understood when viewed down the perspective of time. ”

Portrait of Luella Clay Carson Luella Clay Carson,  Oregon Historical Quarterly (1906)

“ Our Oregon colleges have thus far written no mean records. You may find on any campus in the State a pure democracy. The standard is merit, not wealth or influence. What a man is establishes his position. Large members of the students are self-supporting and from humble homes. The idle spending of money is rare. It sounds strange indeed to say, in these days of college extravagance, that at our State University $350 will provide all the needs for a college year, for a man or woman, comfortably. ”

Alfred Powers,  History of Oregon Literature (1935)

“ The state, though not in proportion to the importance of the work or the public interest in it, at least does something and provides a small but trained and eager staff that makes the Society, through its museum and especially through its library, a functioning institution of daily and far-reaching usefulness. The history department of the University of Oregon, in sound emphasis, encourages graduate students to do their research and prepare their theses in fields of Oregon history. ”
