World's Columbian Exposition

Definition and stakes

Willis Fletcher Johnson,  "My country, 'tis of thee!"

“ The Columbian World’s Exposition will be international because it will hospitably welcome and entertain the people and the products of every nation in the world. It will give to them the fullest opportunity to teach us, and learn from us, and to open new avenues of trade with our markets, and discover materials which will be valuable in theirs. But its creation, its magnitude, its location, its architecture, and its striking and enduring features will be American. The city in which it is held, taking rank among the first cities in the world after an existence of only fifty years, is American. ”

The New Student's Reference Work (1914)

“ The World's Columbian Exposition, in Chicago in 1893, far exceeded all its predecessors. The opening of this century was marked by two industrial exhibitions of some magnitude and attractiveness, one at Glasgow, Scotland, and the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo, N. Y. The design of the latter was to illustrate the progress of the age in science, arts and industries—especially those of the New World. The exposition also had for its object to promote trade among all American countries and to present a great object-lesson showing the industrial development of the continent. ”

C. M. Stevens,  The Adventures of Uncle Jeremiah and Family at the Great Fair

“ This need be none the less true to all, though no two people have seen the same World's Columbian Exposition. In all the [Pg 229] vast throngs that have walked its streets and crowded its palaces for half a year there can be no two individuals who have the same story to tell, or who have the same thought to pay out to the world from that mint of human intelligence. ”
