“ Wyman. Looking along the road, I saw a boy of my own size coming leisurely along; and as he approached I saw it was Ezra Metcalf, a lad that I had seen in Claverton.
“A long time since I have seen you, Ezra,” I said as he came up. “Are you going to the village?”
“Yes; I can’t stand it any longer. Old Wyman is so cross there’s no doing any thing with him. It is work, work, work; and when I would think it was all done, he’d send me into the house to wait on his wife.”
“Men hire boys to work,” I answered.
[135] “Yes; but all the time is a little too much. ”

“ The husband did not reply.
"How old was I, Mr. Wyman?"
"About sixteen, I believe."
"Well; and was I a mere child?"
"You were rather young to marry, at least," Mr. Wyman ventured to say. This remark was made rather too feelingly.
"Too young to marry!" ejaculated the wife, in a tone of surprise and indignation—"too young to marry; and my husband to say so, too! Mr. Wyman, do you mean to intimate—do you mean to say?—Mr. Wyman, what do you mean by that remark?"
"Oh, nothing at all," soothingly replied the husband; "only that
I"—
"What?" ”

“ Judge of their surprise two days after, to receive a note from Miss Weston, saying that her aunt had been seized with paralysis of the brain the day she arrived, and would not recover.
Every test of this nature strengthened Mr. Wyman in the belief in his daughter's vision, and he felt that there could be no safer light placed in his path for him to follow; a light which no more interferes with man's individuality or reasoning powers than the falling of the rays of the sun upon the earth. ”

“ Wyman, "they call themselves insurgents, but they are not recognized belligerents you know." Here Mr. Wyman lowered his voice almost to a whisper: "And you know we have to be very diplomatic in dealing with these Spanish gentlemen, they are so sensitive."
"Mr. Wyman," asked Harry, "are you an American or a Spaniard?"
"Oh, an American—an American always," replied the consul, proudly.
"Then it seems to me, sir, that you should not let the Spaniards select your words for you," said Harry, with some indignation. ”

“ Wyman; but so positive is the decree with regard to the Sabbath, there could be no question with me concerning my duty.”
Mrs. Wyman and Alice followed me down the walk, and begged me not to cherish unkind feelings towards Mr. Wyman.
“No fear of that,” I answered. “He has always been my friend, and I shall not think unkindly of him for this. He [234] is too good a man not to be sorry when he thinks of it with his accustomed coolness.”
I had nothing to do but to walk back to Claverton, and tell Jennie what had befallen me.
“I am sorry, Marston ”

“ Colonel Wyman reported himself at Bolivar, having marched from Rolla and beaten the Rebels in three engagements. The General set out at nine o’clock for our thirty-mile ride. The black horse fell into his usual scrambling gait, and we pounded along uneasily after him. As we passed through Bolivar, the inhabitants came into the streets and greeted us with cheers and the waving of handkerchiefs,—a degree of interest which is not often exhibited. Fording a small stream, we came into Wyman’s camp, and thence upon a long, rolling prairie. ”

“ The next year (1864-65) , when he entered the Medical School, Professor Wyman was again his instructor.
Jeffries Wyman (1814-1874) was a less widely effective man than Agassiz, but his influence counted more in James's student years than did that of any other teacher. "All the young men who worked under him," says President Eliot, "took him as the type of scientific zeal, disinterestedness and candor." N. S. Shaler, an admirable judge of men, has recorded his opinion of Wyman in his autobiography, saying: "In some ways he was the most perfect naturalist I have ever known ... ”

“ Wyman, in a confidential whisper.
"He certainly is not handsome," I answered. "Neither is Bismarck."
"True, but he is a great man."
"We should respect him on account of his learning—probably much more so than the Count whom we are expecting."
"That may be. We don't expect noblemen to be learned," said the widow, disdainfully.
Immediately after breakfast she began to sound Mrs. Gray about the Count. ”

“ Boyd Wyman is still here?”
“Yes.”
“It may be best to speak to him. He is to be trusted in your behalf. While you are gone I will plan a way of escape. Return soon.”
As Mara returned to the side of Wyman’s couch she saw by the actions of the soldiers that she had appeared none too soon to allay their suspicions.
Whatever the scout may have thought he remained quiet. ”

“ However, it is no affair of ours, being on the other side of the Atlantic. And when a nation can get strength and power by robbery, it will be likely to rob.{550}
August 7.
... You should study Wyman’s observations in his own papers. He is always careful to keep his inferences close to his facts, and is as good an experimenter, I judge, as he is an observer. He has a new series of observations to publish. I think that he has not at all pronounced in favor of spontaneous generation, but I will bet on his experiments against Pasteur, any day.

“ Wyman’s overpopulated universe is in many ways unlovely. It offends the aesthetic sense of us who have a taste for desert landscapes, but this is not the worst of it. ”

“ CHAPTER XX Captain Dynamite to the Rescue
Consul Wyman sat in his study in deep thought. His heart was heavy and in his mind plan after plan to save the boys from their threatened fate was formed, only to be abandoned as not feasible. His wife sat with him aiding now and then by a suggestion. She, too, was deeply interested in the fate of the American boys, of whose adventures and self-sacrifice her husband had told her.
"Everything falls to the ground, Annie," he said finally. "There is only one hope and that is an appeal to the government." ”

“ James, who was Wyman's pupil during two critical years, held him in particular reverence and affection, and said of him: "Those who year by year received part or all of their first year's course of medical instruction from him always speak with a sort of worship of their preceptor. His extraordinary effect on all who knew him is to be accounted for by the one word, character. Never was a man so absolutely without detractors. ”

“ Wyman must be at least thirty-five years old, and possibly more. She evidently did not intend to remain a widow longer than was absolutely necessary.
She paid attention to every male boarder at the table, neglecting none. She even made overtures to Prof. Poppendorf, a learned German, with a deep bass voice and a German accent, whose green goggles and shaggy hair, somewhat grizzled, made him a picturesque personality.
We all enjoyed the rebuff which Mrs. [Pg 12] Wyman received from the Disagreeable Woman, though it made us slightly afraid of her lest our turns might come next. ”

“ No mention of the matter was made at breakfast table, but both boys were quick to sense an air of uneasiness among the men, and later, as he caught the eye of the foreman, the latter shook his head as much as to say that he feared the outcome. All that day Bob and Jack worked with the men, felling the great spruces, but although they tried hard to joke and laugh as usual with them, the Frenchmen, almost to a man, lacked that joyous spontaneity of spirit so characteristic of them when everything was to their liking. ”

“ Rex said, adding, “I’m mighty sorry—”
“Now nix on that stuff,” Jack interrupted. “We know all about it, and again I say nix.”
“Then we’d better go into executive session and discuss ways and means,” Bob suggested. “Kernertok, you’re the oldest and wisest. What’s your idea?”
For a time the old Indian sat with bowed head, then he got to his feet and said:
“Injun think only one thing do. It get heap dark pretty soon. Heap cloudy, no moon. Injun creep out, get canoe, go down river to St. Francis. Get help, back soon as can.”
“How far is it to St. Francis?” Bob asked. ”

“ King dropped his fist, and the two looked each other in the eyes for a full minute without speaking. "You'll work tonight or you'll get no supper," he finally threatened.
"Get no supper, eh?" snapped Bob. "If I get no supper tonight, there'll be no cell made tomorrow, just remember that," and then, as King did not at once reply, he continued, "Now see here, no one yet, except my parents, ever made me do a thing I'd made up my mind not to do, and I've made it up good and hard, right now, and you can't make me back down. ”

“ Quickly, the captain sprang up the ladder, and bracing himself, pushed with all his strength against the door, but it did not so much as budge.
"We're trapped, sure as fate," he said, as he gave it up and came down the ladder. "Where do you suppose those fellows were hid all the time?"
"They probably had some secret hiding place which we didn't find," declared Mr. Golden.
"I guess that's about the size of it. Here, Bill, I guess you and Fred are the strongest, you two get up on that ladder and see if you can make any impression on that door. ”

“ TIMBER WOLVES.
The town of Batzahakat is very much like Red Shirt. A few log cabins, one of which serves as a store, huddled together on the bank of the river. It was growing dark when two very tired boys and six nearly played out dogs and an Indian, who acknowledged that he had been more rested, dragged themselves up the bank and made their way along the single short street to the store.
"Do you know the man who keeps the store?" Bob had asked the Indian earlier in the day.
"Oui, Injun know heem. Heem name Jules Lamont. Heem Frenchman, no breed," Lucky told them. ”

“ Springing from the bushes the two boys darted toward the boathouse, and before the intruders could recover from their surprise, they were grabbed and thrown to the ground. It is not to be supposed that they gave in without a struggle, and for a few moments the fight waged fast and furious. But the Golden boys were strong and the fight was over by the time Mike showed up.
"Ah, I thought so," muttered Bob, as he turned his captive over. "What are you doing here this time of night, Will Jenkins?"
"You let me up," was the dogged reply. "Can't a fellow take a walk without being jumped on?" ”

“ While talking, the two men had been leading Bob back to the house. Seeing the dog on the porch, Reed turned him over; "Well he's done for all right, confound him. I wouldn't have taken one hundred dollars for that dog," he said.
"Come on now," urged King, "We'll see to him in the morning. I want to find out how this kid got out of that room."
Reaching the top of the stairs and holding up the lantern, which he had grabbed up from the porch, the method was plainly apparent.
"Well I'll be switched," said King. "Bill we ought to be ashamed of ourselves not to have searched him. ”

“ Pierre and Tiny didn’t seem to pay very much attention to him.”
“That may have been a plant.”
“Mebby.”
“Anyway it’s a cinch that neither Pierre or that there Tiny, as you call him, is the leader. There’s someone with more brains behind all this. It takes brains and a lot of them to outwit Uncle Sam as long as this gang have done it, and I don’t believe either of those fellows can qualify.”
“I believe you. They run more to muscle than to grey matter. But some of these half-breeds are pretty shrewd at that.” ”

“ Golden told the boys that he had promised Edna, their sister, that he would bring her some spruce gum.
“I’ll have to leave right after dinner in order to catch the afternoon train, so you boys had better take the forenoon and get it for me. You know what Edna will say if I come home without it.” And he smiled as though it was something not greatly to be feared but to be avoided if possible.

“All right, sir, we’ll get it,” Bob said smiling. “I know where there’s a dandy gum tree. I saw it this morning and if I’m any judge it’s good for several pounds.” ”

“ Bob assured him as he shook hands.
The boys then introduced their friend.
“Sicum has accepted him, so you can be sure he’s all right,” Jack laughed.
“Injun heap glad know friend of white boys,” Kernertok assured him.
“And it’s a great pleasure for me to know you,” Rex replied as he took the old Indian’s hand. “I’ve heard so much about you from the boys that I feel as though I had known you for a long time already. Believe me, they never get tired of talking about you.”
“White boys talk heap too much,” the Indian grunted and the boys all laughed. ”

“ There ain’t a man round here that’d dare serve that injunction on me.”
“That’s Big Ben,” thought Bob, as he strained his ears, but now the two men were talking only in whispers and he was unable to catch any more of the conversation. “Guess Big Ben intends to cut on that tract, injunction or no injunction,” he thought as he drifted off to sleep again.
At four o’clock Al called the boys and they were soon on their journey again.
Daylight found them several miles nearer the lake and just as the town clock was striking twelve they pulled into Greenville, a small town at the foot of the lake. ”
