Portrait of Gordon Stables Gordon Stables,  The Cruise of the Snowbird: A Story of Arctic Adventure

“ Many though our heroes’ adventures were, and thoroughly though they enjoyed themselves, when the days began to get longer, when the snow began to melt, and whistling winds blew softer through the forest trees, and everything told them spring was on ahead, the thoughts that ere long the Snowbird would burst her icy bounds, that they would be once more free, once more at sea, were very far from unpleasant to them. ”

Various,  Youth, Vol. I, No. 7, September 1902… (1902)

“ Then, remaining between the Woodfolk and the enemy, he keeps a close watch all winter. There can be little danger to the birds as long as Snowbird is there to warn them. But how cold it must be for him? Indeed, some folks say that is what has made his bill and feet so pink just as our hands and noses grow red from the cold. But he is courageous. He stands guard between his friends and the terrible white danger, even during the heaviest snows. So you see that it was not without reason that folks gave him the name, “Snowbird.” Few of the birds would brave the cold as he does. ”
