Charles Hiatt,  Picture Posters (1896)

“ I have already remarked that the poster movement in this country amounts to a positive revolution. No young artist is satisfied unless he has a hand in the decoration of the hoardings; the gold frame is for the time forgotten, and all have their eyes on the lithographers stone. France has undoubtedly had a long start of us, but if she is to retain her supremacy she must look to her laurels. Our young men are beating at her doors, though beating only in a spirit of friendly rivalry. Happily, between England and France there is, at this moment, only one war—the war of the pictorial poster. ”

Charles Hiatt,  Notre Dame de Paris

With every step we take the view changes. We hesitate to leave the spot upon which we stand lest we should lose its charm, and yet we feel that probably a vista even more beautiful awaits us a few paces beyond. The lines of vast piers seem as if they were consciously engaged in surprising us: now they come together and close the view suddenly, unexpectedly ”

Charles Hiatt,  Picture Posters (1896)

“ His sense of beauty, his passion for decoration, make it impossible for him to achieve the daring and victorious colour which is so effective in the work of Chéret. While, however, this is an important matter from the advertiser's point of view, it is of little moment to the collector, whose primary object is to fill his portfolios with things of beauty. At times, indeed, Grasset does achieve irresistible advertisement ”
