by John Newton Nay, I Cannot Let Thee Go

Thou didst once a wretch behold, In rebellion blindly bold, Scorn Thy grace, Thy power defy: That poor rebel, Lord, was I. Once a sinner, near despair, Sought Thy mercy seat by prayer; Mercy heard, and set him free: Lord, that mercy came to me. Many days have passed since then, Many changes I have seen; Yet have been upheld till now; Who could hold me up but Thou? Thou hast helped in every need; This emboldens me to plead: After so much mercy past, Canst Thou let me sink at last? No, I must maintain my hold; ’Tis Thy goodness makes me bold; I can no denial take, When I plead for Jesus’ sake.

by John Newton If the Lord our leader be

Well does Jacob's ladder suit To the gospel throne of grace; We are at the ladder's foot, Every hour, in every place By affirming flesh and blood, JESUS heav'n and earth unites; We by faith ascend to God, God to dwell with us delights. They who know the Savior's name, Are for all events prepared What can changes do to them, Who have such a Guide and Guard? Should they traverse earth around, To the ladder still they come; Every spot is holy ground, God is there--and he's their home.

by John Newton Christ a Redeemer and Friend

He freely loves, and without end. He ransomed me from hell with blood, And by His power my foes controlled; He found me wandering far from God, And brought me to His chosen fold. He cheers my heart, my wants supplies, And says that I shall shortly be, Enthroned with Him above the skies; O what a Friend is Christ to me! But, ah! my inmost spirit mourns; And well my eyes with tears may swim, To think of my perverse returns: I’ve been a faithless friend to Him. Often my gracious Friend I grieve, Neglect, distrust, and disobey; And often Satan’s lies believe Sooner than all my Friend can say.
