Armenian Church

Definition and stakes

William Holden Hutton,  Constantinople: The Story of the Old Capital of the Empire

“ The open apse of the Armenian churches, with its altar covered with candles, contrasts with the hidden holy table of the orthodox church, plain, and concealed behind the high iconostasis with its closed gates.
The Christianity of Pera and Galata is a strange contrast to the solemn Mohammedanism of Stambûl. But it is impossible to attend the offering of the Holy Eucharist in the orthodox churches of Pera and of the Phanar without feeling how firm and enthusiastic is the faith of the worshippers. They stand indeed, hardly less than the Armenians, always on the verge of the undiscovered country.

“ The Armenians as a Nation or Church, have no immediate connection with any ruling power or stately church. The idea of human brotherhood does not yet seem to have very strong grasp in the hearts of men, faintly manifesting its power over the selfish interests. None of the three great churches of Christendom, Greek, Roman Catholic and Anglican, has any special interest in the Armenian church. The Russian church is rather indifferent, while the Greek and Roman churches feel a decided antagonism towards the Arnenian church, though calling her "sister church." ”

“ Evangelization of the Armenian Nation. Christianity was undoubtedly introduced among the Armenians early in the second century of our era, and towards the end of the third century it was officially proclaimed as the national religion of the country. According to the traditions of the Armenian church, the Armenian King Abcarius, having a chronic malady, and hearing about the miracles of Jesus, sent special messengers to him with a letter, and invited the Saviour to come and live in his capital Edessa (the present Ourfa) and be safe from the enmity of Jewish authorities. ”
