“ Hallett and Mr. Rivington will be here"—he consulted his watch—"in five minutes. We are on no account to be disturbed."
Hallett and Rivington came in, five minutes later. Hallett looked angry, and Rivington frightened. Though the hour was early, Hallett's white waistcoat, fresh every morning, showed wrinkles, and its wearer chewed hard at an unlighted cigar; there was a deep perpendicular line over his short, thick nose. Rivington, immaculate, pulled at his slightly gray mustache. ”

“ I only went the width of a river, and yet, the result of that was that I had to do an extra march of some twenty miles."
"Now you are speaking in riddles, Lisle; and if there is one thing I hate, it is riddles. When a fellow begins to talk in that way, I always change the subject. Why a man should try to puzzle his brain, with such rigmarole things, is more than I can imagine."
"Well, Hallett, I really feel too tired to tell you about the matter. I can assure you that it is no joke, being carried down fifteen miles on a stretcher; so please go and ask somebody else, that's a good fellow." ”

“ They are not accustomed, however, to work together. Each man fights for himself, and I feel convinced that they would not stand a determined charge," Hallett said.
"It is all very well to talk about a charge; but how are you going to charge through the bush, where every step has to be cut? However, I suppose our fellows can get through as well as they can."
"It would be horrid work, Bullen, for some of these creepers are a mass of spikes, which would pretty nearly tear a man to pieces, as he was forcing his way past them in a hurry." ”

“ A month after Hallett's arrival, the colonel said, one morning:
"Good morning, Lisle! I am going out with the hounds, tomorrow. They meet near here. As you are not great riders, I won't press you to go with me but, at least, you will ride with me to the meet. It is sure to be a good gathering, and you will probably meet some nice girls; who will, no doubt, have much greater attractions, for young fellows like you, than a gallop round the country." ”

“ Oh, a man who would follow his star at all costs. That is the man I should like to know."
"Go on," said Hallett. "Tell me more of what you would like in the man who made love to you."
"He must never pay me a compliment," said Elsie. "He must not want to do what I wish. He must make me do what he wishes. He must be my master."
"Oh," exclaimed Hallett, impatiently, "that is a Jane Eyre-ish idea. No man who truly loves a woman can be her master. To love is to be a slave." ”

“ Lord Horace was offended.
"I don't know why Waveryng and I shouldn't do as well with our stud cattle as Blake and Trant at Baròlin Gorge have done with their stud horses."
"By the way," said Mrs. Jem Hallett, "have you heard anything about Mr. Blake? I have written to ask him to come and stay. Frank and Elsie are bent on the picnic to Baròlin Waterfall, and he made me promise to let him know when it was coming off."
"Blake has taken ministerial leave, and has disappeared," said Jem Hallett. "I heard somebody say that he was hipped at Elsie's engagement." ”

“ The man walked rapidly until he passed Hallett’s house; then he made for the lake, and I rightfully conjectured that he was going to his boat, which he had left some distance up the shore.
As he approached the water, I drew nearer to him. He passed down a bed of rocks, and there hidden in the bushes was his craft.
Just as he prepared to cast off I hailed him. He was startled, and turned as if to pull out his pistol.
“Stop that!” I ordered. “I have a gun now, and I can fire as straight as you.” ”

“ The white house on Phinney's Hill looked desolate and mournful when the buggy containing Judge Baxter and his two companions drove into the yard. The wagon belonging to Mr. Hallett, the undertaker, was at the front door, and Hallett and his assistant were loading in the folding chairs. Mr. Hallett was whistling a popular melody, but, somehow or other, the music only emphasized the lonesomeness. There is little cheer in an undertaker's whistle.
Captain Gould, acting under the Judge's orders, piloted his horse up the driveway and into the back yard. ”

“ Lord and Lady Waveryng, Lord Horace, In a, Frank, Blake, Trant. She heard Trant speak at the moment. He was bidding good-bye to Lady Horace and Mrs. Jem Hallett, saying that he meant to take advantage of the moonlight and go back to the Gorge to meet a butcher he was expecting the first thing in the morning.
"And fancy keeping a butcher waiting, Mr. Hallett, and for us poor beggars who don't sell a hundred head in the year! I couldn't trust Sam Shehan to soothe his wounded feelings."
"A butcher, Lady Waveryng, is the aristocrat of the bush," explained Jem Hallett. "We all bow down to him. ”

“ Lisle laughed merrily.
"My dear Hallett, it is useless to look forward so far into the future. Let us content ourselves with the evils of today. In spite of your grumbling, you know that you like the life and, if the bullets do but spare you, I have no doubt that you will be just as energetic a soldier as you have shown yourself in this campaign ”

“ Mrs. Hallett said gently, "but I suppose he thought it would look like bragging, and there is nothing Englishmen hate more than that. Men who do great things are the very last to speak of them."
"Ah well, I will tell you some day all about them!" Mercedes said, "and then you will not be surprised that I say he is one of the most wonderful men in the world, and why I, and Leon and my sisters, love him so."
The two girls looked at Arthur with wondering eyes. ”

“ You must marry Frank Hallett, and he will make you happier than I ever could."
"I must marry Frank Hallett!" she repeated in a dull, nervous way. The pride and the anger had all gone out of her. It did not occur to her to upbraid him. It seemed to her that they were both bound in a fate for which neither was responsible.
"Elsie," he said, "I'm in a mad mood to-night. That dancing has set every nerve going. I can't restrain myself. Oh, darling, it's worth a great deal to have such a moment as this. I shall try to keep away from you after to-night. ”

“ Elsie sauntered into the verandah. Lady Horace was going to follow her, but when she saw that Hallett had come out of the dining-room, evidently with that intention, leaving Lord Horace and Mr. Trant, she drew back and let Hallett pass her.
Elsie had gathered a spray of the stephanotis, and was stroking her lip with one of the waxen flowers.
"How do you like Mr. Trant?" asked Hallett, abruptly.
"I don't like him at all," she answered. "I hate a man who calls me 'Miss,' and looks at me in that fashion." ”

“ In a quarter of an hour Hallett returned again, put his eyeglass in his eye, and stood for a couple of minutes without speaking, regarding Lisle furtively.
"Oh, don't be a duffer," the latter said, "and drop that eyeglass. You know perfectly well that you see better, without it, than with it."
"Well, you are a rum chap, Bullen. You are always doing something unexpected. I have been hearing how you and a Sikh started to swim the Ordah, when it was in flood, with a wire ”

“ Mr Hallett rested his big shoulders against my cushions, and said in his low, grave tones:—
“You are a woman—you understand these things. Is there any way in which I can help? It’s pretty tough to see an old friend worried to death, and just sit and look on—but Thorold’s proud, and it’s difficult to interfere. It seems a cruel thing that illness should fall so heavily upon the middle classes. The rich are independent, the poor have hospitals; but a man in Thorold’s position is no sooner through with the mental torture than he is up against an army of bills. ”

“ Hallett answered. "But," he added, "it is too soon to talk about that with poor Slaney not yet in his grave."
"Oh, nobody cares about Slaney. The king is dead, long live the king—that's my motto, and' Slaney was a confounded Radical, hand and glove with the working man. I'm a working man myself, but I ain't a Radical." Lord Horace talked excitedly and rather thickly. Elsie looked at him, and drew her delicate eyebrows together in a frown.
"I think we had better walk on to the Humpey," she said. "Ina will be wondering what has become of us all." ”

“ For once I agree with you thoroughly, Hallett. It is bad enough to march in West Africa, but it is worse to sit still. It is only when you try to do that, that you find how much you are pulled down; and the longer you sit still, the less disposed you are to get up; whereas, on the march, you are so full of the idea that you may be ambushed, at any moment, that you have no time to think of your fatigues. ”

“ Frank Hallett got beside Elsie at the start, and Blake was fain to content himself with Lady Horace. Ina did not, care much for Blake, but she made herself as agreeable as she could, because she wanted to keep him from Elsie. Lady Horace was beginning to be a little frightened of Blake's influence over Elsie.
Hallett was not quite himself, or was it that Elsie was disturbed and preoccupied? "Have you enjoyed your day?" he asked.
"It is not finished yet. Call no man happy till he is dead, you know." ”

“ We Complete the Model. Matters did not improve at Great Ormond Street as the months rolled on. There was evidently a serious estrangement between Linny and Stephen Hallett; and in my frequent visits I saw that she was as wilful as she was pettish, and that she was setting her brother at defiance. Mrs Hallett was more piteous and complaining than ever, and her son grew haggard and worn with care. ”

“ Lisle said, scornfully, "we have plenty of soldiers at home. Every barrack was crowded with men, as we came away; and there were a great number of the militia and volunteers, to back them up. Above all there was our fleet which, however much the Frenchmen value their warships, would have knocked them into a cocked hat in no time.
"Well, I suppose it is time to go out and inspect our men."
"I suppose it is, Bullen," Hallett said despondently, as he stretched himself. "If there were no inspections and no parade, an officer's life would be really a pleasant one." ”

“ What will become of us at all?" and in her fright she went headlong into a pile of milk-pans, her unwieldy arms making certain involuntary revolutions, causing the air to resound with a chorus, which might have done credit to the first callithumpian in the land.
"Ho! what is all this?" cried Mr. Santon, who had stepped in at the commencement of the prelude; "what are you looking for under those pans, Biddy?"
"Sure, sir, and it's mesilf that's afther being exterpretated intirely! ”

“ Luke gave him the briefest of glances.
"It was because I found out who elected him that I resigned the job," he answered. "I have just been offered the Municipal League's nomination for District-Attorney. When I am elected, it will be by the people."
"That will be about 2000 A.D.," sneered Hallett.
Luke shrugged his thin shoulders and returned his gaze toward the leader of the trio.
"A bridge falls on one of your roads in this county," he said. "It kills twenty-five people and wounds a hundred—all passengers in one of your trains. ”

“ Can such fair ones of earth, meet with the chilling breath of adversity? Yes, we may meet with them in our wanderings! Let us deal with them tenderly; for it may be one of heaven's sensitive flowers. Stranger still would that word have sounded to Mrs. Grosvenor and her son, in connection with their Sea-flower, yet it was remotest from their minds, that such thoughts would find their way to her heart. Mrs. Grosvenor's circumstances were indeed more embarrassed than she had expressed to Natalie, yet she had sufficient left, wherewith they might by retrenching a little, live very comfortably. ”

“ Arthur told the story. Both the regent and her daughter were greatly interested, and insisted upon hearing much fuller particulars than he wished to give of the manner of his escape from Cabrera, and of his return to carry off Roper.
"No wonder the man is attached to you," Christina said warmly; "it would be strange indeed if he were not. It was a grand action, Captain Hallett, however much you may make light of it. Now, sir, I own that I feel sleepy; I scarcely closed an eye last night. Would you mind riding for a time?" ”

“ Santon's reply; and we heartily respond, "May she have her reward!"
Never a word did Mrs. Santon receive from the Sea-flower, in return for her ungenerous treatment of her, other than tones of kindness; and Natalie was happy under this new dispensation, for she said within herself,--"I am but bearing a part of the burden which would crush dear Winnie's heart;" and so she sang and played with her usual glad spirit, gliding about the house with simple dignity, with a cheering word for every one, and, as Biddy said,--"she was an escaped ray of light, too bright for the darkness to hide." ”

“ And in contrast, this little group of nineteenth-century people, all young—almost all handsome, the outside band of stockmen and the two half castes and this inner circle—the men in their bushmen's dress. Frank Hallett and Trant stalwart and splendid with animal health and vigour; Lord Horace with his Apollo face and that nameless stamp of the old world aristocracy; Lady Waveryng, with the same stamp—highbred, and yet simple, the natural product of centuries of civilization ”
