Portrait of Sir Leslie Ward Sir Leslie Ward,  Forty years of 'Spy'

“ James Ward, R.A., was a most interesting character and an artist of great versatility. As landscape, animal, and portrait painter, engraver, lithographer, and modeller, his work shows extraordinary ability. In his early days poverty threatened to wreck his career, but although misfortune hindered his progress, he surmounted every obstacle with magnificent courage and tenacity of purpose. ”

Portrait of Mrs. Humphry Ward Mrs. Humphry Ward,  Robert Elsmere

“ The Wardlaws, who in general never went into society, were asked to a quiet dinner in Bedford Square, and came. Then, of course, it appeared that Robert, with the idealist's blindness, had forgotten a hundred small differences of temperament and training which must make it impossible for Catherine, in a state of tension, to see the hero in James Wardlaw. It was an unlucky dinner. James Wardlaw, with all his heroisms and virtues, had long ago dropped most of those delicate intuitions and divinations, which make the charm of life in society, along the rough paths of a strenuous philanthropy. ”

Portrait of Leslie Stephen Leslie Stephen,  Dictionary of National Biography… (1899)

“ Lawrence Pountney’ (pp. 243–4) . In a note on the character and dispositions of the London aldermen privately supplied to James II, Ward is described as a very considerable merchant and as a quaker (Gent. Mag. 1769, p. 517) . The latter statement is probably not correct; but Ward's sympathies, like those of his colleague, Sir Humphrey Edwin [q. v.] , were strongly opposed to the high-church party, and probably inclined to the dissenters.
Ward married, on 8 June 1653, Elizabeth, daughter of William Hobson of Hackney.
