Mr. Brock

Definition and stakes

Anna Chapin Ray,  By the Good Sainte Anne: A Story of Modern Quebec

“ Jacques is her devoted slave.”
“What about Brock?”
Nancy laughed with a carelessness which was not entirely feigned.
“Mr. Brock burns incense before every woman, young or old. He is adorable to us all, and we all adore him. Still, he never really takes us in earnest, you know.”
“I’m not so sure of that,” the doctor said, with sudden decision.
“You like Mr. Brock?” she questioned.
“Yes. Don’t you?”
“I should be an ungrateful wretch, if I didn’t.” Then she added, “Speaking of ungrateful wretches, daddy, was anything ever more strange than the whole Barth episode?”

“ Brock, forty-eight miles, pays the operating expenses of the whole mountain division, and has done so almost since the day it was opened. But I'd rather lose the revenue ten times every year than to lose Morris Blood." The second vice-president was talking to Mr. Brock. Their car was just rounding the curve into the gap in front of Mount Pilot.
"What do you think of Blood's chances?" asked Mr. Brock.
"I don't know. A mountain man has nine lives."
"What does Glover think?"

“ Mallow," said he, cheerfully, "but I am not without hope of recovery. I contrive to keep up my spirits, which is, I suppose, a greater preventive of inanition than the most stringent of medicines."
"I am indeed glad to know you are better, Mr. Brock. Will conversation tire you?"
"Not at all. It is a pleasure to converse intelligently. How is Mrs. Carson?"
"Miss Bellairs is quite well," said Laurence, prepared for this question. Brock turned an astonished look on his visitor. "But why do you call Olive by her maiden name?"
"Because that is her name for the present. She is not Carson's wife."
