Scorpio is both the eagle of the spirit, soaring aloft, well fed with all that is worth carrying away from the earth; and also the scorpion, whose natural home is the desert.
In sex, either way, life is given. Shall it be to your spirit making fat and full your immortal self, or will the other interpretation be yours? And will you leave yourself dead and annihilated, a skeleton, to the Ego, the Divine spirit? For sex is indeed the foundation of all. ”

“ Scorpio is a vital sign, and governs the excretory system. The influence of the stars, point to a long journey, which you will be called to take later on in life; it will be made necessary by your position and business connections. You will not travel by water, and during this trip you will hear of the death of a near relative; you will meet with success and make many friends, one of whom will prove treacherous, and will not hesitate to slander you, trying to ruin your prosperity in business and love. ”

“ Scorpio is, like Aries, the house of Mars, 'and also his joy.' Its natives are strong, corpulent, and robust, with large bones, 'dark curly hair and eyes' (presumably the eyes dark only, not curly) , middle stature, dusky complexion, active bodies; they are usually reserved in speech. It governs the region of the groin, and reigns over Judæa, Mauritania, Catalonia, Norway, West Silesia, Upper Batavia, Barbary, Morocco, Valentia, Messina, etc. It is feminine, and unfortunate. (It would appear likely, by the way, that astrology was a purely masculine science.) ”

“ Scorpio is in a region of the heavens famous for the appearance of novcæ, the wonderful temporary stars that occasionally flash upon our view the light that spells a great conflagration or mighty cataclysm far out in space, the enormity of which is beyond our comprehension.
α Scorpii is known as "Antares," from the Greek words ἀνκ Ἄρης, meaning "similar to" or "a rival of Mars," doubtless in reference to its reddish hue. The ancient Hindus called the star "the ruddy."
The Arabs knew it as "the Scorpion's Heart," and even now it is often called "Cor Scorpii," the heart of the Scorpion. ”

“ Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Ophiuchus.—During the summer months a brilliant constellation is visible, called Scorpio, or the Scorpion. The configuration of the chief stars of this constellation is shown in Fig. 394. They bear some resemblance to a boy's kite. The brightest star is of the first magnitude, and called Antares (from anti, instead of, and Ares, the Greek name of Mars) , because it rivals Mars in redness. The stars in the tail of the Scorpion are visible in our latitude only under very favorable circumstances. This constellation is shown in Fig. ”

The Moon is opposed by Uranus, which disposes to a wayward and autocratic disposition, some degree of eccentricity, a nature subject to impulses and precipitate actions. The Moon therefore takes the prime colouring of the planet Mars, because it is in the sign of Mars, Scorpio, and we accordingly find that Mars is a very prominent planet in the horoscope, being in the Mid-heaven and near the conjunction with Neptune. ”

“ The three stars in a line, β, δ, and π Scorpii, seem to have attracted attention in all ages, much as the three stars in Orion's Belt are always associated together. The Hindus figured these stars as a Row or Ridge, and on the Euphrates this group represented the Tree of the Garden of Light, associated with the idea of the Tree of Life in the midst of the Garden of Eden, which has a special significance when it is recalled that Scorpio may be considered as representing one phase of the Cherubim which was set in the Garden of Eden. ”

“ The earlier Greek writers—Eudoxus, Eratosthenes, Hipparchus—knew of only eleven zodiacal symbols, but made one do double duty, extending the Scorpion across the seventh and eighth divisions. The Balance, obviously indicating the equality of day and night, is first mentioned as the sign of the Libra and Scorpio. autumnal equinox by Geminus and Varro, and obtained, through Sosigenes of Alexandria, official recognition in the Julian calendar. ”

“ Some authorities claim that Aquila is the flying eagle, the semblance of the fourth face of the Cherubim, but in view of the fact that Antares, the brilliant first magnitude star in the Scorpion, is always known as one of the so-called four "Royal Stars," known as such from remote antiquity, there seems to be some ground for the argument that the constellation Scorpio was originally considered to represent the eagle. ”

“ There can be but little doubt, therefore, that the first Sign of the Zodiac was Virgo, the second was the Altar, and the third was the Scorpion. This sign was sometimes represented by a Snake, and sometimes by a Crocodile, but generally by a Scorpion, which last is found on the Mithriac Monuments, and on the Zodiac of Dendera. It was considered a sign accursed, and the entrance of the Sun into it commenced the reign of Typhon. ”

“ The bright stars in the front of the body of Scorpio have an effect similar to that produced by the influence of Mars, and partly to that produced by Saturn: the three in the body itself, the middle one of which, called Antares, [38] is ruddy and more luminous, are similar to Mars and moderately to Jupiter: those in the joints of the tail are like Saturn and partly like Venus: those in the sting, like Mercury and Mars. The nebula is like Mars and the Moon. ”

“ Mediumship is a negative phase of spiritual sight or hearing possessed by a person controlled by an outside intelligence who then prophesies, This undesirable phase of seership was represented in the Zodiac by the symbol of the Scorpion, which has the sting in its tail. In the Serpent Initiate the Creative Cosmic Fire was drawn upward through the head to serve a spiritual end; in the Medium the creative energy is expressed for selfish, sensual ends through the procreative organ ruled by Scorpio. ”

“ Taurus, Scorpio, Leo and Aquarius are called ‘fixed’ signs because when they are on the angles of a horoscope and many planets are in them, they make the person very ‘set,’ and give him an unusual amount of perseverance so that he will nearly always achieve whatever he attempts to do if it is humanly possible. ”

Scorpio, in the Egyptian zodiac, represented the monster Typhon. Originally this constellation extended also over the space now filled by Libra. ”

“ For instance, in diseases of Scorpio, the remedies mentioned under Taurus, Leo, and Aquarius may prove useful, and so on with the other signs.
We find that the planets have a few remedies which invariably remain with the planet; such as Pulsatilla with the Moon; Sepia with Venus; Belladonna with Mercury; Aconite with Mars; Veratrum album with the Sun; Bryona with Jupiter; Rhus Tox. with Saturn; Opium with Uranus; and Dulcamara with Neptune. These drugs should be looked to in all afflictions. ”

The children of Scorpio usually have a very uncertain temper and a sarcastic tongue that bites like the sting of the scorpion, when they turn that side of their nature. ”

“ The resemblance to a Scorpion is not difficult to see, hence this constellation is perhaps the most aptly named of any.
The ruddy star Antares, the brightest star in the constellation, is in the heart of the Scorpion. It lies about 40 degrees southwest of Ras Alhague, in Ophiuchus, and a little over 20 degrees west of the bow of Sagittarius. The fact that it is the most brilliant star in this region of the sky renders its identity unmistakable. ”

“ The Greeks fabled that Orion having boasted to Diana and Latona that he would kill every animal on the earth, these goddesses sent a poisonous reptile—a scorpion—which stung him so that he died. Jupiter raised the scorpion to heaven, and afterwards, at Diana's request, did the same for Orion. ”

“ THE IMMUNITY OF LARVÆ
So little do we possess the Scorpion’s secret that unexpected facts crop up that strangely complicate the problem. The study of life brings us these surprises. Repeated experiments, with mutually consistent results, seem to justify our formulation of a rule when, suddenly, important exceptions arise, compelling us to follow a fresh path, directly opposed to the first, and leading us to doubt which is the last stage on the road to knowledge. ”

“ Quite a dozen star-clusters of this kind are visible to the naked eye in the southern hemisphere, the most striking being in Scorpio, where it shines as a conspicuous silvery spot just beyond the Scorpion’s tail, midway between κ Scorpii and γ Sagittarii. It is named M 7, which means the seventh in Messier’s list of clusters and nebulae. In a binocular it is seen to be a group of very many stars, some close together, others scattered. Lacaille, with his little half-inch telescope, counted from 15 to 20 stars, and Herschel, with his large reflector, estimated the number at 60. ”
