Robert S. Rait,  The Scottish Parliament Before the Union of the Crowns

“ When Charles II died, Parliament addressed James VII in terms ludicrously obsequious. "The death of that our excellent monarch is lamented by us to all the degrees of grief that are consistent with our great joy for the succession of your sacred majesty." He tells us that the methods of the Lords of the Articles were not quite so secret as they used to be. ”

“ The greatest and most lasting effect of the Scottish Parliament is, however, the judicial system of the country. The College of Justice, which, in its present form, was established in the year 1540, ultimately derives its powers from the Scottish Parliament, which, in 1370, first appointed a small committee to deal with its judicial work. ”

Robert Chambers,  Domestic annals of Scotland (1861)

“ In the debates on these measures, the Scottish parliament exhibited a degree of eloquence which was wholly a novelty, and the memory of which long survived. The general sense of danger thus created in England proved sufficient to overcome that mercantile selfishness which had inflicted so much injustice upon Scotland.
