Portrait of John Fleming Wilson John Fleming Wilson,  The Salving of John Somers (1920)

“ In all this splendor the Maid of Bath became small and diminished; the island looked miniature, surrounded by the iridescent sea. Somers changed the course and headed in where a space showed be tween the lines of leaping breakers on the reef.
For some time they slipped along soundlessly. Presently the boom of the surf rose about them. Somers took the wheel himself and conned the schooner, with two hands forward in the bows and two at the sheets. The deck began to rise and fall with greater liveliness, the blocks of the gear to thump and creak.

Portrait of Oliver Optic Oliver Optic,  The Young Lieutenant; or, The Adventures of an Army Officer

All day long, the tide of army wagons and cattle flowed down the road; and the brigade remained near the church at Glendale, waiting for them to pass.

Portrait of Molly Elliot Seawell Molly Elliot Seawell,  Decatur and Somers

“ Decatur turned, and, going a little distance off, watched while the frigate slowly swung round and headed for the open bay, stealing off like a ghostly ship in the darkness. He felt the strongest and strangest sense of loss he had ever known in his life. He had many friends. James, his brother, who had entered the navy, was near his own age, but Somers was his other self. Unlike as they were in temperament, no two souls ever were more alike in the objects aimed at. Each had a passion for glory, and each set before himself the hope of some great achievement, and ordered his life accordingly. ”
