Portrait of George Barr McCutcheon George Barr McCutcheon,  Anderson Crow, Detective

“ Now, the village of Tinkletown is a slow-going, somnolent sort of place in which veils are worn by old ladies who wish to enjoy a pleasant snooze during the sermon without being caught in the act. That any one should wear a veil with the same regularity and the same purpose that she wears the dress which renders the remainder of her person invisible is a circumstance calculated to excite the curiosity of even the most indifferent observers in the village of Tinkletown. ”

“ An' what's more, I've got to repair the jail, and officially notify Deacon Rank he's had an accident to his car.”
Mrs. Crow had little to say until she was snugly in bed. Her husband was getting into his official garments.
“I think you're foolish to go out again Anderson,” she said. “It's not daylight yet. There wont be anybody around, this time of day, to listen to how you captured those robbers, and—”
“Don't you believe it,” said he. “I bet you fifty cents you are the only person in Tinkletown that's in bed at this minute. They're all afraid to go to be bed, an' you can't blame 'em.

Joseph Tinker,  Tinker's Dam

"Yes, Fred?" I said quietly.
"If you don't mind, Tinker," he said brusquely. "I'd like to be present for this interview."
"Tinker?"
"I'm sorry, Gyp," he said. "I'm ... I'm upset."
"I'll bet you are, you sneak," Anita said. "Chief," she told me. "He was fit to be tied when you chased us out. The first thing he wanted to know was whatever had made you decide to get Tony Carlucci in here to trick his gypsy snake.
