Godchild

Definition and stakes

Thomas L. Kinkead,  Baltimore Catechism, No. 4

“ To repeat what has already been said, godparents contract a spiritual relationship with their godchild, and in the event of marriage, they must make known this relationship to the priest. The godfather and the godmother do not contract a relationship between themselves, or with the child's parents, but only with the child so that neither the godfather nor the godmother could later marry their godchild without first obtaining proper dispensation; that is, permission from the Church granted by the bishop or Pope. ”

Edwin Sidney Hartland,  The legend of Perseus, Volume 2… (1895)

“ The fact is that in the popular mind sponsorship creates a new and real kindred between the godparent and the god-child, and not only between the godparent and god-child, but between the godparent and the godchild’s relations. The effect seems analogous to that of the blood-covenant. Among the wandering Gipsies of southern Hungary a rite similar to that of the blood-covenant is actually performed. The day when the child’s hair is first cut is kept as a festival. ”

Portrait of Herman Whitaker Herman Whitaker,  The Mystery of The Barranca

“ Yes, I was only fifteen, so my first godchild is now seven. That reminds [Pg 66] me—she is waiting below to repeat her catechism. There is just time—if you would like it.”
“I would be delighted. So the position is not without its duties?”
“I should think not.” Her eyes lit with a touch of indignation. “I hold the baby at the christening after helping to make the robe. When they are big enough I teach them their catechism. You could not imagine the weight of my responsibilities, and I believe that I am much more concerned for their behavior than their mothers.
