Portrait of Alice Duer Miller Alice Duer Miller,  The Red Book Magazine, Volume 33… (1919)

“ Hewer, the Torby butler, stood in the hall, wearing the old-fashioned livery the Torbys affected. Hewer was not the kind of butler who opens the door; on the contrary, when the great double doors had been swung open by two footmen, Hewer was discovered standing back center, doing absolutely nothing, except, if a female guest should be so thoughtless as to direct her steps to the men's dressing-room, or a male to the women's, he set them right with a slight but autocratic gesture of the hand.
Hewer was rather a young man to be so very great.

“ So William Hewer and I out again about midnight, and there by candle-light did make shift to gather forty pieces more; and so to bed, and there lay in some disquiet until daylight. 11th.—And then William Hewer and I, with pails and a sieve, did lock ourselves into the garden, and did gather the earth and then sift those pails in one of the summer-houses (just as they do for diamonds in other parts) , and there, to our great content did, by nine o'clock, make the last night's forty-five up to seventy-nine; so that we are come to some twenty or thirty of what I think the true number should be. ”

Warren Bert Kimberly,  History of West Australia (1897)

“ Hewer is not a mere nominal function, but an important and onerous trust. Mr. Hewer's practical and financial abilities, however, are well able to discharge successfully the duties of many similar offices. His ripe and varied experiences, his bright intellectual qualifications, his energy and enterprise, render him a highly efficient and capable administrator. ”
