Portrait of Samuel Wendell Williston Samuel Wendell Williston,  The Osteology of the Reptiles (1925)

“ The skull of the ichthyosaurs, while retaining not a few primitive characters, has been highly and peculiarly modified in many ways. The greatly elongated premaxilla, unlike those of other aquatic reptiles, is broadly separated above by the very large nasal, and bears numerous teeth; the maxillae are short. All bones are paired. The frontals are small. The very large orbits have the usual bounding bones, prefrontal, postfrontal, postorbital, jugal, and lacrimal, but their relations are somewhat changed. ”

“ Page 49 (5) .—The "Anonymous Conqueror" assures us, as a fact beyond dispute, that the devil introduced himself into the bodies of the idols, and persuaded the silly priests that his only diet was human hearts! It furnishes a very satisfactory solution, to his mind, of the frequency of sacrifices in Mexico.—Rel. d'un gent., ap. Ramusio, tom. iii. fol. 307. Page 50 (1) .—The Tezcucan priest would fain have persuaded the good king Nezahualcoyotl, on occasion of a pestilence, to appease the gods by the sacrifice of some of their own subjects, instead of his enemies ”

Portrait of William Hickling Prescott William Hickling Prescott,  History of the Conquest of Mexico…

“ The royal posterity became so numerous in a few generations that it was common to see them reduced to great poverty and earning a painful subsistence by the most humble occupations. Ixtlilxochitl, who was descended from the principal wife or queen of Nezahualpilli, maintained a very respectable position. He filled the office of interpreter to the viceroy, to which he was recommended by his acquaintance with the ancient hieroglyphics and his knowledge of the Mexican and Spanish languages. ”
