“ Is it reasonable, under pretence of testing a vocation, to oblige a child to spend a long time amid the dangers of the world, to witness all its vanities, and share in the treacherous joys of its festivities ? Could even the most solid virtue resist assaults of this kind? We acknowledge, indeed, that prudence is supremely necessary ; but, had the holy doctors, whose teaching we are here laying down, less of that virtue than we have? Why should we endeavor to be wiser than the Church, who allows the religious profession at sixteen years of age, and entrance into religion at any age ? ”

“ Blessed be God who gave us time and strength to begin it and bring it to a close. O Lord ! may this humble work promote thy glory ! We ask this of thee through Mary, thy divine mother, and our mother also. May all who shall read these pages be enlightened by thy light and touched by thy grace, so that they may devote to thy service, every one in his way, the life which they hold from thee ! Holy doctors ! whose doctrine we have borrowed, fertilize by your protection the instruction which you have given us. May it be understood by all whom the prejudices of the world deceive and lead astray ! ”

“ Who would dare to advise a person desirous of embracing poverty for the sake of Jesus Christ, first to live amid riches and observe the laws of justice, as if the possession of wealth were a preparation for the practice of poverty, whereas, on the contrary, wealth throws many obstacles in its way? Are we bound to say to a young man : Live among persons of the opposite sex or among libertines, so as to form yourself to chastity, which you will afterward observe in religion as if it were easier to cultivate that virtue in the world than in the cloister? ”
