Marie Carmichael Stopes,  Married Love: A New Contribution to the Solution of Sex Difficulties

“ Partly or wholly unconscious of the brilliance and full perfection of her beauty, she yet delights in its gentle promptings to reveal itself to her lover's eyes when he adores. This innocent, this goddess-like self-confidence retreats when the natural ebb of her vitality returns.
How fortunate for man when these sweet changes in his lover are not coerced into uniformity! For man has still so much of the ancient hunter in his blood that beauty which is always at hand and ever upon its pedestal must inevitably attract him far less than the elusive and changing charms of rhythmic life.

Marie Carmichael Stopes,  Conquest; Or, A Piece of Jade; a New Play in Three Acts

“ Loveday.
Oh, Nora, what lots of sheep! And the hills, how beautiful they are. The air is as clear as crystal and the sky seems so big.
Gordon.
You notice that? Isn’t the sky the same size in England, Miss Loveday?
Loveday.
No! The sky in England seems closer down on us than it is here. Our sky, even when it is blue, is as though all the smoke from all the chimneys had got on to it and weighed it down a bit.
Gordon.
Everything is big here; and mostly beautiful. It makes big ideas come into one’s head to be so solitary on these wide hills.

Marie Carmichael Stopes,  A Journal from Japan: A Daily Record of Life as Seen by a Scientist

“ The scenery nearly all the way is simply glorious. These hackneyed words are totally unfit for use in describing this fairy-like land; one would choose to pick words freshly coined, beaten out of pure gold of love by an artist, words as fresh as the greenness of this earth’s garment, and as dainty as its feathery decorations of bamboos. Words, in fact, which do not exist are the only ones fit to use about the country of Japan.
The bamboo is so different from what I had imagined it, and is, in fact, more like a graceful and unusually symmetrical birch tree than anything else!
