Pregnancy

Definition and stakes

A. M. Mauriceau,  The married woman's private medical companion

“ PREGNANCY. CONCEPTION. In order to procreate the human species, there is a periodical discharge of blood from the vagina of every female, termed the catamenia, or menses. The secretion of this fluid commences at that period of life termed puberty, which occurs at different ages, according to the climate. In some latitudes it commences as early as eight or ten, and in others not until fifteen. As soon as conception or pregnancy commences, this discharge ceases, and goes to support the fœtus, or the child. ”

“ To sum it up in a word, your part in preventing an abortion or miscarriage after pregnancy has begun, consists largely of avoiding fatigue; resting when tired; avoiding physical shocks such as blows upon the abdomen, jolts or falls particularly during the first sixteen or eighteen weeks and at the time when menstruation would ordinarily occur if you were not pregnant, and avoiding overwork during the later weeks of pregnancy. ”

A system of practical medicine…

“ Does pregnancy exist and is abortion inaugurated? or are the symptoms those of dysmenorrhoea, metritis, or uterine tumor? The existence of pregnancy is a condition often difficult to discover, especially in unmarried women intent upon deceit, or in cases where the patient is herself in ignorance and no cessation of the menstrual flow has [p. 506] occurred. ”
