And so the historian may recall the early days of lunar exploration, the Apollo project, the landing of unmanned Viking spacecraft on Mars, and the encounters of Voyager spacecraft with Jupiter and Saturn as the first steps in a sustained program of space exploration—a program that is profoundly changing man’s perspective of himself, of the Earth, and of the larger cosmos beyond.

It will take years for scientists to assimilate completely the information which is cascading down from Voyager. What more will this marvel of technology have to tell us before it departs the solar system to travel endlessly among the stars?

Oxygen is not a prerequisite for all living systems. While it is sometimes concluded that free oxygen is needed for all but the simplest organisms, less efficient metabolic processes coupled with higher food collection efficiency—or a more sluggish metabolism—would seem to do just as well. Earth is the only planet in the solar system on which molecular oxygen is known to be present in large amounts. Since plant photosynthesis is the primary source of atmospheric oxygen, it seems safe to infer that no other planet has large-scale plant photosynthesis accompanied by the production of oxygen.
