The first grey daylight had found Sir Ralph Fairfield pacing his sitting-room with uneven strides, his hands clasped behind his back, the stump of a cold cigar between his teeth. His interview with Heldon Foyle had not been calculated to calm him.
"I'm a fool—a fool," he told himself. "Why should they suspect me? What have I to gain by Grell's death?"
It was the attitude of a man trying to convince himself. There was one reason why he might be supposed to wish his friend out of the way, but he dared not even shape the thought.

He looked at them hard, and Green, peeping over his shoulder, frowned.
"Cipher!" he exclaimed.
It was undoubtedly cipher, but whether a simple or abstruse one Foyle was in no position to judge. He had an elementary knowledge of the subject, but he had no intention of attempting to solve it by himself. There were always experts to whom appeal could be made. A successful detective, like a successful journalist, is a man who knows the value of specialists—who knows where to go for the information he wants. That meaningless jumble of letters could only be juggled into sense by an expert.

The detention room of a London police station is a compromise between the comparative luxury of a waiting-room and the harshness of a cell. Meanwhile, Foyle had set every available man of the divisional detachment of the C.I.D. busily at work.
