Max Eastman,
Max Eastman's Address to the Jury in the Second Masses Trial
(1918)
“ It is very important that democracy should exist in politics, and that everybody should have the right to vote, and Socialists believe in it. But after all, how much of our, time, how much of out interest, and how much of our life does politics influence? Is not the main occupation of our time, and the main engagement of our interest, determined by business rather than political considerations? And is it not true that those who rule business, whoever they may be, rule the better part of our lives? ”
