Joseph C. Hutchison,  A Treatise on Physiology and Hygiene

“ They are very strong, and of a silvery whiteness. They may be felt just beneath the skin, in certain parts of the body, when the muscles are being used, as at the bend of the elbow or knee. The largest tendon of the body is that which is inserted into the heel, called the tendon of Achilles, after the hero of the Grecian poet, the fable relating that it was at this point that he received his death-wound, no other part of his body being vulnerable. ”

Ed. James,  Practical Training for Running…

“ To prevent the hands from swelling, a short stick or switch, carried in the hand will be efficacious while walking about. Strains are of frequent occurrence, and chiefly arise from the man making some sudden effort when the tendons or the fascia (the thin covering) of the muscles are stiff and sore from previous hard work. The tendon Achilles—from the heel to the calf of the leg—is the principal seat of the most dangerous of the strains of the tendons, and is incurable except by rest, and that of some duration. ”

H. S. Jennings,  Anatomy of the Cat

“ Origin by a strong tendon from the medial sesamoid bone of the femur (Fig. 61, 4) and by muscle-fibres from the surface of the shaft for a short distance proximad of this.
The two heads unite by their contiguous borders at the junction of the first and second thirds of the tibia. The common muscle narrows rapidly and ends in a flat tendon which joins the tendon of the soleus to form the so-called tendon of Achilles (tendo calcaneus) (Fig. 90, t) . This has its
Insertion into the proximal end of the calcaneus (Fig. 90, 4) near its ventral border.
