Brandy Station

John D. Billings,  Hardtack and coffee (1887)

“ More than twenty-three years have since elapsed, but those twelve or fourteen rides, after dark, across the rough country and frozen ground around Brandy Station were so thoroughly jolted into my memory that I shall never forget them. The seven dollars apiece per night which we received for our services was but a trifling compensation for the battering and mellowing we endured en route, and no more than paid for wear and tear. No harder vehicle can be found to take a ride in than an army wagon. ”

“ At eight o’clock the same morning I left for Washington, in company with Lieutenant Grisson, who had obtained a fifteen-day leave of absence. On our way to Brandy Station we met the artillery-trains and long lines of infantry moving toward the scene of conflict. When within a mile of the station our ambulance broke down, which we left sunk in the mud nearly to the axles, and started on foot; but, while trying to pick our way so as to avoid the deepest mud and water, the shrill whistle of the locomotive is heard, [Pg 164] and the train comes rushing on from Culpepper. ”

J. Newton Terrill,  Campaign of the Fourteenth Regiment New Jersey Volunteers

“ Give a soldier a knife, and with a few articles a tent will soon be built. Brandy Station, a place heretofore but little known, was now the base of supplies for the army, trains running as far as Culpepper, where the Cavalry were encamped. Corduroy roads were built, fatigue parties being sent out each day under competent officers. Large store houses were built, and thousands of bushels of grain stored for the horses and mules. During the Summer the troops had nothing to eat on the march but hard-tack, sugar and coffee. Extra rations were now issued, some of the men faring better than at home. ”
