Hatha Yoga

Definition and stakes

Swami Swatmarama,  Hatha Yoga Pradipika

“ These Mahāsiddhas (great masters) , breaking the sceptre of death, are roaming in the universe. Like a house protecting one from the heat of the sun, Hatha Yoga protects its practisers from the burning heat of the three Tāpas; and, similarly, it is the supporting tortoise, as it were, for those who are constantly devoted to the practice of Yoga. A yogi or yogini desirous of success should keep the knowledge of Hatha Yoga secret; for it becomes potent by concealing, and impotent by exposing. ”

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa,  The Gospel of Râmakrishna (1907)

“ So the practice of Hatha Yoga will bring one control over the body, but it will carry one only so far. Raja Yoga, on the contrary, deals with the mind and leads to spiritual results through discrimination, concentration and meditation. Perfect concentration of the mind is necessary in the path of Raja Yoga. Mind is like the flame of a lamp. When the wind of Concentration. desire blows, it is restless; when there is no wind, it is steady. ”

Portrait of Yogi Ramacharaka Yogi Ramacharaka,  Hatha Yoga

“ It is quite true that the Yogi is not a gross eater, nor is he inclined to rich and fancy dishes. On the contrary, he smiles at the folly of such things, and goes to his plain and nourishing meal, knowing that he will obtain there full nourishment without the waste and harmful matter contained in the more elaborate dishes of his brother who is ignorant of the real meaning of food.
A maxim of Hatha Yoga is: "It is not what a man eats, but the amount that he assimilates, that nourishes him."
