Hosanna

Definition and stakes

Matthew Henry,  Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible… (1700s)

“ Maxima debetur puero reverentia—Our intercourse with the young should be conducted with the most scrupulous care. Children will learn of those that are with them, either to curse and swear, or to pray and praise. The Jews did betimes teach their children to carry branches at the feast of tabernacles, and to cry Hosanna; but God taught them here to apply it to Christ. Note, Hosanna to the Son of David well becomes the mouths of little children, who should learn young the language of Canaan. ”

Catharine Shaw,  Hosanna (1909)

“ He sees them wandering, He loves them; He goes after them; He seeks them.
And when He finds them, even the angels in Heaven rejoice!
IX. "JESUS CALLED A LITTLE CHILD UNTO HIM" MATTHEW 18.2
"And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them." Matthew 18.2.
OUR Lord Jesus loved the little children. He took them up in His arms, and blessed them. He rejoiced to hear their glad hosannahs as He entered Jerusalem.
One day there was a crowd round Him, and the disciples were asking Him who should be the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Various,  Modern Russian Poetry (1921)

“ New ground
Upon golden
Crests.
12
Listening to the earth,
I spit
With out-thrust, lower lip,
And lo!
Rains
Pour with the sound of spears
And, clinking,
Pierce the earth.
13
Eternal,
Not by hands created,
With the spirit of Life-giving Spring
I sweep
The tilled field,
And
On the naked knees of the universe
I pour
The blue waters
Of My Eternal Triumph.
Hosannah in the highest!
