Mr. Williams

“ Williams to continue the business at Bingham, Mr. Carden prepared to return to Birmingham, taking with him Mrs. Carden and229 Flo and Egbert. For the scene of his prosperity was to become his future home. It was arranged that Will should remain in America and attend college, after which he was promised Mr. Jordan’s place as secretary at the Bingham mills, in order that he might represent his father’s American interests.
“We’re going to be partners, some day, my boy,” said Mr. Williams, slapping Will’s shoulder with characteristic heartiness; “so hurry through college, and get ready for work. ”

“ J. H. Hanson, in a book, The Lost Prince, attracted much attention to Williams, who died a few years later in 1858, aged about 73. There is a memoir of Mr. Williams in vol. iii. of the Memorial Biographies of the N. E. Hist. and Geneal. Society. The question of his descent produced a number of magazine articles (cf. Poole’s Index, p. 1411, and appendix to the Longmeadow Centennial Celebration) , the outcome of which was not favorable to Williams’ pretension, whose truthfulness in other matters has been seriously questioned. ”

“ Williams led in the laughter that followed, his bull voice roaring through the room. "You'd better buy that hoss before you assist in th' evenin's worship," he cried in boisterous good humor, "for I'm sayin' a puncher ain't nowhere near in th' prospector's class when it comes to walkin'; though I reckon th' boys will play you for th' hoss, at that, an' you'd be no better off in th' end. My remarks as how this town has slid back didn't have nothin' to do with our poker playin', Mr. Jones. If you feel like settin' in ag'in' a Kansas cyclone, you can't say I didn't warn you." ”

“ No; despite the evidence in favour of that idea, a person so respectable, so dignified, addressing them, too, with that noble assurance to which a man who begs for himself is not morally entitled,—a person thus characterized must be some high-hearted philanthropist who condescended to display his powers at an Institute purely intellectual, perhaps on behalf of an eminent but decayed author, whose name, from the respect due to letters, was delicately concealed. Mr. Williams, considered the hardest head and most practical man in the town, originated and maintained that hypothesis. ”

“ After that I saw less of Williams, from choice. He has a literary way with him in telling a story—and I didn't wish Alida and Dulcima to sympathize with young Harroll and that little ninny, Catharine Delancy. So I kept clear of Williams until we arrived in Paris.

CHAPTER IV WHEREIN A MODEST MAN IS BULLIED AND A LITERARY MAN PRACTICES STYLE
"What was your first impression of Paris, Mr. Van Twiller?" inquired the young man from East Boston, as I was lighting my cigar in the corridor of the Hôtel des Michetons after breakfast. ”

“ Charles Williams--that was his name--had called several times. But she had given him an appointment for the following Tuesday, and was willing that Mr. Yale should see him on that occasion.
All this in a formal and precise way; but there was something in the tone of her reference to Mr. Williams which led the Archdeacon to smile. "She is over head and ears in love," he thought. And in his reply, after saying that he would be in Sidmouth Street on Tuesday at the hour named, he added that if there appeared to be nothing against Mr. ”

“ Williams rattled off a description of Kirk Anthony so photographic that the consul suddenly saw a great light.
"Yes, I know him all right," he confessed, warmly. "He's a good friend of mine, too; in fact, he lived with me for a while." Misconstruing the eager expression that came to his caller's face, he rose heavily and thrust out a thick, wet hand. "Don't let's beat about the bush, Mr. Anthony; your son is safe and well and making a name for himself. ”

“ Captain Butler snorted impatiently and moved his gaze meditatively to the Heraldr.
Mr. Edwins frowned upon McGuire. Mr. Jorgan regarded him with the intentness of the muscular man annoyed by a gabbler.
All were trying to imagine the trick Williams expected to play them. They could see that McGuire was amused, was half-mocking them; and being hard-headed men, they did not in the least understand. ”

“ He is followed by Captain Williams, in the full uniform of an American Naval Officer; he is whiter headed than when we saw him last, but he looks able to wrestle any man upon the ground, a cheer bursts forth for him also, though none recognize in him aught but the brave sailor who had shown such sympathy at the grave of Mary Waters. They are received by the Curate, Mr. Johnson, the Lawyer and the Clerk. The young Earl waves his hand, and every door and window, in the spacious edifice is thrown open. ”

“ Each man was a complete replica of the other, save that the face of the new arrival was thin and haggard with that yellowish tinge which comes from long confinement.
As Mortimer staggered back, the uninvited guest recoiled in his turn. He was staring fixedly across the room at his double who met his gaze firmly, erect, tense, silent. The others looked in sheer stupefaction from one to the other of the two Mr. Bellwards. For nearly a minute the only sound in the room was the deep ticking of the clock, counting away the seconds separating him from eternity, Desmond thought. ”

“ At daybreak the crew hung motionless, cramped hands at pin-rails and ropes. Silent, cold, tired, they watched nothing at all with the glazed steadiness of sick men.
Their second mate, Mr. Edwins, had been called aft. That voice had spoken. Mr. Edwins went by them, his oilskins swishing. They never saw him on deck again.
Brundage was recognized, loitering erect on the poop. The men stared and mumbled, then grew agitated. What had happened? It must be all right—the officers were on deck through the night. But the man with that voice had not been their captain. ”

“ Williams. “I will send you money and further instructions to your home, for Mr. Jordan must not suspect you are in my employ. It will be best for you to confide in no one but your mother and Doctor Meigs. Merely tell your brother and sister, or any other enquirers, that you are going East.”
“Very well, sir.”
One can imagine the eager anticipation that controlled Will Carden during the next few days. He ordered a new suit of clothes from the local tailor, and the doctor helped him to select a suitable outfit for his travels. ”

“ William was about twenty-seven years of age, of a dark hue, and of a courageous bearing. On the score of treatment he spake thus: "I have been treated as bad as a man could be." Emma, his wife, had seen about the same number of years that he had, and her lot had been similar to his. Emma said, "My master never give me the second dress, never attempted such a thing." The master was called Bushong Blake. William was owned by a Mr. Tubman. After leaving Slavery, William changed his last name to Williams, and if he and his wife are now living, they are known only by their adopted names. ”

“ So low--for under certain conditions a tone conveys much--that he shot a stealthy glance towards the door before he answered, "John Williams."
"Blind," I replied in the same low tone.
"William Williams."
"He is dead. He was Mr. Wigram's valet. I remember reading in the newspaper that he was with his master, and was killed by the Indians at the same time."
"True. I fancy that that was the case," he answered huskily. "And the handwriting is Lord Wetherby's." ”

“ He uniformly speaks in the first person singular: “I was sorely tossed for fourteen weeks—I left Salem in the winter’s snow—I found a great contest going on between the chiefs—I travelled between them—I first pitched and began to build and plant at Seekonk—I received a message from Mr. Winslow—I crossed the Seekonk and settled at Mooshausick.” It is strange that he should, on no occasion, mention that some of his friends suffered with him, if any actually did. All accurate information concerning Williams, during these fourteen weeks, must, I apprehend, be drawn from his writings ”

“ A car will meet you there and I can go home to bed.”
The ends sealed again! thought Desmond. What a man of caution, the Chief!
“And this gentleman here, Matthews?” asked Desmond, lighting one of the skipper’s cigars.
“That, sir, is Mr. Crook, who does any little jobs we require in the way of make-up. Our expert on resemblances, if I may put it that way, sir, for we really do very little in the way of disguises. Mr. Crook is an observer of what I may call people’s points, sir, their facial appearance, their little peculiarities of manner, of speech, of gait. ”

“ He cast a hasty glance over his shoulder at the other occupants of the room, who were gathered round the desk.
“I’m not a society man, Mr. Greve,” he added, “and I have a lot of work on my hands regarding the case. So I think I’ll run off now ...”
He broke off, gave Robin a large hand, and, looking neither to right nor to left, made a hurried exit from the room, taking Inspector Humphries with him.
“Now that we are just among ourselves”—the solicitor was speaking—“I think I may seize the opportunity of saying a word about Mr. Parrish’s will. ”

“ Ever'body else in hell'll have a good reason for bein' there. Now the devil'll say—— Oh, the steward put some in duff sauce for Mr. Butler. Tray was right under my nose when I opened the door; an I followed the steward into the pantry to grow confidential. He tried to lie to me—lie to my nose.
“An' about the devil. He's goin' say to Williams: 'McGuire'd been all right but for you, Hurricane. Brundage too. Brundage was a good old sinner till he got old, dried up an' took to readin' the Bible. ”

“ Bellward?” answered a nasal voice.
“Bellward speaking!” said Desmond, wondering who had called him up. The voice was a man’s but it was not the abrupt clear tones of the Chief nor yet Mr. Matthews’ careful accents.
“Madame Le Bon wishes to see you!”
Madame Le Bon? thought Desmond. Why, that was the name that Nur-el-Din had given him. “I am Madame Le Bon, a Belgian refugee,” she had said.
“Do you know whom I mean?” the voice continued.
“Certainly,” replied Desmond. “You will come alone. Otherwise, Madame will not see you. You understand? ”

“ Desmond let himself in with his key. The housekeeper had returned and was laying the dinner-table. In the library the curtains were drawn and a fire burned brightly in the grate. The room looked very snug and cosy by contrast with the raw weather outside.
Desmond shut and locked the door and then went to the telephone at the desk. “Ring up 700 Stanning”—he repeated his instructions to himself “and ask for Mr. Elias. Assistance’ll be with you within fifteen minutes afterwards.” ”

“ Clobb, his deep-set eyes angrily aglow, said he'd be damned if he touched wet canvas to it.
The Portuguese and half-breeds chattered.
Brundage, who had become a sort of bosun's mate about the deck—and men who had no liking for him had respect—asked from whom the order came. Mr. Juggins said:
“The cap'n.”
An unidentified voice gave a contemptuous, “Bu-uah—cap'n!”
Mr. Juggins pretended not to hear. He was inside a crowding circle and could not have found who said it.
Sam-O, with much rolling of eyes, puffed noisily and pulled at the collar of a red cotton shirt; it was no way to treat white men. ”

“ He discovered some ingenuity in mending locks and [25_83] hinges, and other little things, which in a house, are often getting out of order. Every room was looked into; if perchance a nail might be loosened, the putty falling from a pane of glass or a button off—in truth, there was nothing of this sort which escaped his care.
The week soon passed away,—his sea clothes were all made, and sent on board the vessel. John went to take leave of his faithful teacher, Mr. Brown, who gave him several good books and his blessing at parting. ”

“ Hit's all in the d'y's work,” said Mr. Juggins.
Men picked up pieces of canvas, took swabs, buckets and coal. They moved off slowly.
Matt Ward laughed. His body swayed a little, and his red face was very red. He held on to the poop rail, watching, though his eyes were a little blurred.
“Get halong there,” said Juggins to Clobb.
“I'm no damn collier!”
“Hu ain't, huh? Hu ain't no syler neither. Hu didn't know a deck-'ouse frum a chicken coop when hu come ha-board. Stow hur jawtackle han' turn to,” said Mr. Juggins not unkindly, for his own heart was not in the work. ”

“ And yet the Israel of God now, the regenerate or new born, the circumcised in heart by repentance and mortification, who willingly submit unto the Lord Jesus as their only King and Head, may fitly parallel and answer that Israel in the type, without such danger of hypocrisy, of such horrible profanations, and of firing the civil state in such bloody combustions, as all ages have brought forth upon this compelling a whole nation or kingdom to be the antitype of Israel. ”

“ Ain’t there a likely one among ’em? If Virginia didn’t know the 203 children so well, I’d be for choosin’ her. But a stranger’s what we want. That school seems to need a stranger ’bout every term.”
“That’s just the difficulty,” said Mr. Hunter. “It is a hard school, and these girls aren’t used to schools out here. The girl I am thinking of is Mary Williams, but she’s young—only eighteen. ”

“ But I dare not move into that patch of yellow light from which the only view into the scullery was afforded.
The singing stopped. Again I heard a door open. Was he going away?
Then I saw a thin shaft of light under the area door.
The next moment it was flung back and the waiter, Karl, appeared, still in his blue apron, a bucket in either hand.
He was coming to the refuse bins.
Pudd'n Head Wilson's advice came into my mind; "When angry count up to four; when very angry, swear." I was not angry but scared, terribly scared, scared so that I could hear my heart pulsating in great thuds in my ears. ”
