Niobrara River

Definition and stakes

John G. Neihardt,  The River and I

“ For a half-hour, as we proceeded, the sound increased, until it seemed close under our prow. We knew there was no cataract in the entire lower portion of the river; and yet, only from a waterfall had I ever heard a sound like that. We pulled for the shore, and went to bed with the sinister booming under our bow.
Waking in the gray dawn, we found ourselves at the mouth of the Niobrara River. Though a small stream compared with the Missouri, so great is its speed, and so tremendous the impact of its flood, that the mightier, but less impetuous Missouri is driven back a quarter of a mile.

United States. National Park Service,  Agate Fossil Beds National Monument…

“ The land was built up a few hundred meters by sediments continually brought down from the mountains to the west. Eventually, continued uplifts of the Rockies and the Great Plains combined with erosional cycles to leave the modern Niobrara River. The two erosional remnants known today as Carnegie and University Hills were produced by the cutting of the modern river system. On the sides of these hills were exposed the tangle of bones which marked the site of ancient tragedy. ”

Frances I. Sims Fulton,  To and Through Nebraska

“ Left Valentine about 3:30 in a baggage and mail car, over the sandy roads, now crossing the Niobrara bridge 200 feet long, 108 feet high; river not wide; no timber to be seen; now over a sand fill and through a sand cut 101 feet deep, and 321 feet wide at top, and 20 at bottom. Men are kept constantly at work to remove the sand that drifts into the cuts. ”
