St. Nicholas (magazine)

Definition and stakes

William Fayal Clarke,  ../../ (1905)

“ Dodge would have been the last to claim the entire credit for the success of St. Nicholas. Every magazine is, of course, the work of many minds and many hands. No one more promptly or willingly acknowledged how much St. Nicholas owed to the business energy and foresight of its publishers, and to the diligence and devotion of her editorial associates. No one gave heartier recognition to the generous coöperation of its contributors and artists. The editorial authority was hers, but she trusted her assistants more and more with the actual making of the magazine ”

Various,  St. Nicholas Magazine for Boys and Girls…

“ Nicholas: I think you are the nicest magazine in the whole world. I think "Little Lord Fauntleroy" is a beautiful story. It seems so real. Cedric reminds me of my little cousin Birdie (that is his pet name) . One day his aunt (who is an artist) asked him if he did not want her to paint him. He said: "I had rather be as I are." He is nearly four years old. I live on a vineyard of 160 acres.
Your faithful reader,
Lillian H.
