Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008

“ Genetic testing can allow individuals to take steps to reduce the likelihood that they will contract a particular disorder. New knowledge about genetics may allow for the development of better therapies that are more effective against disease or have fewer side effects than current treatments. These advances give rise to the potential misuse of genetic information to discriminate in health insurance and employment. ”

“ While severe mutant alleles that eliminate protein function represent the null state and confer lethality, hypomorphic alleles simply reduce protein function below an optimal level, resulting in a phenotype recognized as disease. In this manner, lethal genes can have mutations that only reduce protein function and therefore present as disease in the human population, allowing for inheritance of these more mild alleles in genetic diseases. ”

“ The results indicate a highly shared genetic origin of monogenic, complex and environmental diseases. Moreover, most diseases cannot be attributed to a single gene but to defects of several genes. Interestingly, these genes are likely to participate in a core set of biological processes. ”
