Gonorrhea

Definition and stakes

The Home Medical Library, Volume 2…

“ Gonorrhea in women is the most frequent cause of their sterility, and also is a common source of abortion and premature birth. It is the cause in most cases of blindness in infants (p. 205) and also of vulvo-vaginitis in girl babies. Furthermore, gonorrhea is so alarmingly prevalent that it is stated on good authority that the disease occurs in eighty per cent of all males some time during their lives. The disease is not confined to prostitutes, but is common, much more frequently than is suspected, in all walks and classes of life and at all ages. ”

M. D. Moses Scholtz,  Sex problems of man in health and disease

“ It is absolutely impossible to differentiate between real Gonorrhea and simple urethritis by the clinical appearance of the case or to estimate the seriousness and duration of the case by the visible symptoms, such as the amount of discharge, intensity of pains, etc. Not only the patient, but even the physician can not establish the presence of Gonorrhea in the case without a microscopical examination. A man who claims to be able to estimate the nature and seriousness of the case from the looks of things is either an ignoramus or impostor, or both. ”

Thomas W. Shannon,  Self Knowledge and Guide to Sex Instruction…

“ Can gonorrhea and syphilis be permanently cured?—If gonorrhea is promptly and properly treated, it can, in many cases, be cured without danger of return or any serious effects being transmitted to the wife or child. It is also a fact that in many cases of gonorrhea, even when properly treated, there is a strong tendency to run into chronic conditions. When the disease has been neglected or poorly treated, or when a case by its own persistency runs into a chronic state, many such cases are never cured so that{360} they may not return in some form. ”
