Oesophagus

Definition and stakes

A system of practical medicine…

“ The frequent deglutition of undiluted spirituous liquors is said to give occasion at times to stricture of the oesophagus, but in these instances this result is usually due to precedent chronic oesophagitis thereby excited, and terminating in infiltration and hyperplasia of the submucous connective tissue, and sometimes great thickening of the epithelium as well.
Males are more frequently the subjects of stricture of the oesophagus, and early adult life the most frequent period for its occurrence, though it may present at any age.

Portrait of George Albert Boulenger George Albert Boulenger,  The Cambridge natural history, Vol… (1904)

“ The oesophagus leaves the branchial sac in the dorsal middle line, near the posterior end of the dorsal lamina. It is a short curved tube which leads ventrally to the large fusiform thick-walled stomach, ridged internally. The intestine emerges from the ventral end of the stomach and soon turns anteriorly, then dorsally, and then posteriorly, so as to form a curve, the intestinal loop, in which the ovary lies, open posteriorly. ”

“ Figure 6G is a section through the plane 750 of figure 6A. The oesophagus, oe, is seen as a small, circular opening between two much larger openings, the lungs, lu. The epithelium of the oesophagus is the same here as in the more anterior regions described above; that of the lung rudiments is very variable in thickness, even in different parts of the same section, being in some places composed of a single layer of cuboidal or even flattened cells, in other places consisting of four or five layers of cells (not well shown in the figure) . ”
