Usquebaugh

Definition and stakes

Flora Masson,  Robert Boyle (1914)

“ A manuscript Bible was sent to Dr. Weston for Christchurch Library; “cane-apples” (variously described as the Arbutus and the Espalier apples) and pickled scallops from Ireland, to other friends; “a rare lyttle book” to the Earl of Arundel, and usquebaugh to the Earl of Suffolk. Sir Edmund Verney’s new butler from Ireland came in for the Earl’s own scarlet doublet with hose and cloak, while the Archbishop of Canterbury [23] accepted a “ronlett of usquebaugh” and a piece of black frieze for a cassock. ”

It drowsed in a shimmer of heat—a fair prospect of undulating farm-lands, golden and green, diversified with patches of timber, threaded by narrow streams that laughed back at the smiling skies, compassed round with rugged foothills; all infinitely peaceful.

Richard E. Ahlborn,  The Penitente Moradas of Abiquiú

“ My indebtedness in this study to local residents is immense: first, for inspiration, from Rosenaldo Salazar of Hernández and his son Regino, who introduced me to penitente members at Abiquiú and four times accompanied me to the moradas. The singular opportunity to measure and to photograph interiors and individual artifacts is due wholly to the understandably wary but proud, penitentes themselves. The task of identifying religious images in the moradas was expertly done by E. Boyd, Curator of the Spanish-Colonial Department in the Museum of New Mexico at Santa Fe. ”
