“ We may suppose that the process by which the retrograde rays are produced is somewhat as follows : neutral atoms or molecules acquire a negative charge when they are just in front of the cathode, they are then repelled from the cathode and driven through the dark space, acquiring under the electric field in the discharge tube a velocity of the same order as that acquired by the positively electrified particles of the positive rays during their approach to the cathode. ”
