“ Oh! in the Khî and the Khü,
There are many fish in the warrens;—
Sturgeons, large and snouted,
Thryssas, yellow-jaws, mud-fish, and carp;—
For offerings, for sacrifice,
That our bright happiness may be increased. ”

“ King Khăng shows his sense of what was required of him to preserve the favour of Heaven, a constant judge; intimates his good purposes; and asks the help of his ministers to be enabled to perform them.
Let me be reverent! Let me be reverent!
(The way of) Heaven is evident,
And its appointment is not easily preserved [1] .
Let me not say that it is high aloft above me.
It ascends and descends about our doings;
It daily inspects us wherever we are.
I am a little child,
Without intelligence to be reverently (attentive to my duties) ”

“ It is interesting, in the study of plant life, to note the extent to which various peoples have assigned to plants qualities and meanings that existed only in their own ideas or beliefs. Some of these have been beneficial, as, for example, the idea that a tree has a soul, and for that reason should not be cut down, lest one should hear “the wailing of the trees when they suffer in this way.” It might be a good thing if certain people, nowadays, had such beliefs as would lead them to treat considerately not only trees and plants, but birds and four-footed animals as well. ”

“ Kû Hsî expands the lines thus:—'Such is the beauty of her robes and appearance, that beholders are struck with awe, as if she were a spiritual being.' Hsü (Yüan dynasty) deals with them thus:—'With such splendour of beauty and dress, how is it that she is here? She has come down from heaven! ”

“ The young people call the same plant touch-me-not, because the plant is, indeed, nervously impatient when its seed pod is touched, and responds with a snap that throws the seeds to a distance of many feet. It is startling, on first acquaintance, to have the seed pod pop—go to pieces—double itself up into a lot of spirals, and throw its contents in every direction. It is fascinating, too, to touch the ends of one pod after another as they hang from the branches in some lowland place. ”

“ The symbol of the Camp-Fire Girls is also admirable. It is fire, as one would naturally expect from the term, and the fire means more than the ordinary flame for cooking or heating. The intense heat of fire is a symbol of enthusiasm. Anything that is worth doing at all is worth doing well and heartily. We are inspired to good works by seeing the work of others, and here is the first step in the life of a Camp-Fire Girl. She never finds the fire ready-made. She must learn to be independent of every one else. The first degree is that of wood-gatherer, and the emblem, crossed logs. ”

“ Clear and to be preserved bright,
Are the statutes of king Wăn.
From the first sacrifice (to him) ,
Till now when they have issued in our complete state,
They have been the happy omen of (the fortunes of) Kâu. ”

“ The king said, 'Ah! ye hereditary rulers of my friendly states, and all ye my officers, managers of my affairs, hearken clearly to my declaration.
'Heaven and earth is the parent of all creatures; and of all creatures man is the most highly endowed.* The sincerely intelligent (among men) becomes the great sovereign; and the great sovereign is the parent of the people. ”

“ They wait till somebody else coaxes and urges or inspires them. This is not the best method. The fire of enthusiasm should be developed by one’s own personal efforts. It is, therefore, wisely directed that this fire in the woods of the Camp- Fire Girls shall, if possible, be started by individual effort, not with borrowed fire or even with matches, for that symbolizes some one else’s work. But what, after all, is the ardor of enthusiasm worth if it does not lead to loftier, spiritual ideals? ”

“ Perhaps this brief ode was sung as a prelude to the dance, or it may be that the seven lines are only a fragment. This, indeed, is most likely, as we have several odes in the next decade, all said to have been used at the same occasion.
Oh! great wast thou, O king Wû,
Displaying the utmost strength in thy work. ”

“ The site of the city of Shâo was in the present department of Făng-khiang, Shen-hsî. The first possessor of it, along with the still more famous duke of Kâu, remained at court, to watch over the fortunes of the new dynasty. They were known as 'the highest dukes' and 'the two great chiefs,' the duke of Kâu having charge of the eastern portions of the kingdom, and the other of the western. The pieces in this Book are supposed to have been produced in Shâo, and the principalities south of it within his jurisdiction, by the duke. ”

“ When all the princes with their hosts were assembled, the king reviewed the hosts, and made the following declaration:—'Oh! ye multitudes of the west, hearken all to my words.
'I have heard that the good man, doing good, finds the day insufficient; and that the evil man, doing evil, also finds the day insufficient. Now Shâu, the king of Shang, with strength pursues his lawless way. He has driven away the timeworn sires, and cultivates intimacies with wicked men. ”

“ We pay so much attention to the charm of its song, the grace of its flight, its interesting habits, and the beauty of its plumage, that seldom, if ever, do we even think of those important parts of the bird’s body, the feet and legs. Indeed, so far as most persons are concerned, wild birds might have no legs at all, so slight is the notice given to them. ”

“ He has put men into offices on the hereditary principle. He has made it his pursuit to have palaces, towers, pavilions, embankments, ponds, and all other extravagances, to the most painful injury of you, the myriads of the people. ”

“ The ancients have said, "He who soothes us is our sovereign; he who oppresses us is our enemy." This solitary fellow Shâu, having exercised great tyranny, is your perpetual enemy. (It is said again) , "In planting (a man's) virtue, strive to make it great; in putting away (a man's) wickedness, strive to do it from the roots." Here I, the little child, by the powerful help of you, all my officers, will utterly exterminate your enemy. Do you, all my officers, march forward with determined boldness to sustain your prince. Where there is much merit, there shall be large reward ”

“ With the dynasty of Shang white had been the esteemed and sacred colour, as red was with Kâu, and hence the duke had his carriage drawn by white horses. 'The language,' says one critic, 'is all in praise of the visitor, but it was sung in the temple, and is rightly placed therefore among the Sung,' There is, in the last line, an indication of the temple in it. ”

“ Patriotism is united with religion, and they are required to commit to memory Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, the preamble to the Constitution, and to the Declaration of Independence, and also one hundred verses of the Bible, or stanzas of hymns or other sacred literature. So the pursuits of the Camp-Fire Girls comprise all that makes life really worth living. Long may echo the call of Wohelo to inspire thousands and thousands of girls in outdoor activities in personal improvement, and in helpfulness to others. ”

“ The fire is then extinguished, and the hearth left in order, to symbolize that, from the hearth of interest in the activities of life, we may attain the best results by storing away in our heart the unseen fire of spiritual desire that shall animate and permeate our life, and inspire it to higher ideals.
What are these higher ideals? Certainly it is the first of Wohelo—our work. In a ceremony of lighting three candles where one stands for work, one for health, and one for love, the Camp-Fire Girl light one candle and repeats the following :
“I light the light of Work, for Wohelo means work.” ”

“ Our young people are undoubtedly familiar with the fact that the sponge, as we ordinarily know it, is in reality the flexible skeleton of a colony of salt-water animals.
Nearly the entire length of a “glass-sponge,” known as Venus Flower-basket.
(Euplectella aspergillum.) The Venus flower-basket, a favorite and beautiful object found in many natural history collections, is a similar growth, only its skeleton is composed of silica, which in appearance resembles colorless glass. For this reason the name “glass-sponge”’ is often applied to the framework of this group of animals. ”

“ We cannot tell by which of the kings of Shang the sacrifice here referred to was first performed. He is simply spoken of as 'a descendant of Thang.' The ode seems to have been composed by some one, probably a member of the royal House, who had taken part in the service.
How admirable! how complete!
Here are set our hand-drums and drums.
The drums resound harmonious and loud,
To delight our meritorious ancestor [2] .
The descendant of Thang invites him with this music,
That he may soothe us with the realization of our thoughts [3] .
Deep is the sound of our hand-drums and drums ”

“ The means of living, formerly obtained by hunting and fishing, have been greatly lessened by the destruction of the fish by canneries, and of the fur-bearing animals and game by white trappers. The reindeer industry is therefore an important part of life in many Eskimo villages. The total number of reindeer in Alaska is now over thirty-three thousand; of these the natives themselves own sixty per cent., or more than twenty thousand, and are always anxious to obtain more, preferring deer rather than cash for their services. The Government does not sell reindeer. ”

“ The management wisely recommends this Indian method, which not only takes the girls and the bystanders back to primitive days, but impresses this important lesson: do not wait to be led; do not wait for somebody to inspire you. Create your own original fire of enthusiasm. There are many young people, and older ones too, I fear, who are ready to follow, but slow to originate. ”

“ The lady shows the grand virtue of a Chinese widow, in that she will never marry again. And her grief would not be assuaged. The days would all seem long summer days, and the nights all long winter nights; so that a hundred long years would seem to drag their slow course. But there is not any hope expressed of a re-union with her husband in another state. ”

“ At about nine o’clock in the evening, at the beginning of April, if you will look at the sky toward the south, you will see a group of bright stars in the form of a sickle, and another group to the east of it in the form of a right-angled triangle. The very bright star at the eastern point of the triangle is Denebola. The bright star at the end of the “handle” of the sickle is Regulus. In olden times, people fancied that the stars in this vicinity formed the figure of a lion. ”

“ The mainspring, coiled in the “barrel” is the power of the watch
(Magnified about five times.) The motion is prevented from being too fast by what is known as an escape-wheel, the cogs of which work in connection with the “pallet and fork.” This lets the motion “escape” in a series of short stoppings, well known as the ticking of the watch. In connection with the “pallet and fork” is the balance-wheel, whose vibrations regulate the speed at which all shall move. This balance-wheel serves the same purpose in a watch that the pendulum does in a clock. ”

“ At the edge of the bridge, or on one of the projecting stones of the old wall, I have often amused myself by touching these irritable pods. No matter how many times you may have done it, you want to try just once more, and invariably they startle you, though you may know just what they will do. ”

“ With whom can I dwell? I abide alone.
The dolichos grows, covering the jujube trees;
The convolvulus spreads all over the tombs.
The man of my admiration is no more here;—
With whom can I dwell? I rest alone. ”

“ When our common winter birds are writing their parts in his classification of birds, and in his autographs on the light coverlet of snow, is a study of their habits. Most of us have a general good time for us not only to learn to distinguish knowledge of the foot of the ordinary domestic as many different bird, as, for example, the common chicken ”
