Cock Robin

Definition and stakes

Agnes S. Underwood,  The Story of a Robin

“ Cock Robin, having dismissed the four, turned to his wife and Robinette.
“I hope, my dear, he was not hurt by his rough brothers and sisters?”
“No,” she replied, “he was not hurt; and I am now satisfied that his legs and wings are all they should be. As for his brains, he has more in his little head than [15] all the others put together. I feel sure Robinette will have a history.”
Cock Robin put his head first to one side, then to the other, and gave a funny, chirrupy laugh.
“Ah! you mother birds are all alike; you think your special nursling is sure to turn out the flower of the flock.”

Portrait of J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps,  Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales

“ And so, Cock Robin, farewell!
All the birds in the air
Fell to sighing and sobbing,
When they heard the bell toll
For poor Cock Robin!
The above version of this widely-extended poem is taken from a copy printed many years ago in Aldermary Churchyard, entitled, "Cock Robin, a pretty gilded toy for either girl or boy, suited to children of all ages," 18mo. It is reprinted even at the present day with a few immaterial variations.
In Eccardi Historia Studii Etymologici, 8vo. Han. 1711, p. 269, is an old Wendic nursery ballad of a somewhat similar character.

Portrait of S. S. Van Dine S. S. Van Dine,  The Bishop murder case (1928)

“ It’s too dashed simple; and it doesn’t account for the fiendishly perfect reconstruction of the Cock-Robin rhyme. There’s something deeper—something darker and more horrible—in this grotesque business.—Who, by the by, found Robin?”
“Dillard himself. He had stepped out on the little balcony at the rear of the house, and saw Robin lying below on the practice range, with an arrow through his heart. He went down-stairs immediately—with considerable difficulty, for the old man suffers abominably from gout—and, seeing that the man was dead, phoned me.—That’s all the advance information I have.”
