Leopold Wagner,  Names: and Their Meaning; A Book for the Curious

“ Mill Street affords us an additional memory of the rurality of London in bygone times. George Street (also St. George’s Church) , Hanover Street, and Hanover Square were designations in honour of the Hanoverian succession in the person of George I. Davies Street, connecting Berkeley Square with Oxford Street, received its name in compliment [282] to Miss Mary Davies, the heiress of Ebury Manor, Belgravia, who carried that estate by her marriage into the possession of the Grosvenors. ”

“ HANOVER SQUARE ROOMS. In 1773 a piece of ground on the east side of Hanover Square at the north-west corner of Hanover Street, formerly part of a field called the Mill Field, alias Kirkham Close, and described as 'containing in breadth from north to south in the front next the Square as well as in the rear 40 feet of assize, more or less, and in depth from west to east on the north side as well as on the south, 135 feet more or less,' was occupied by a house, garden, and office, then in the occupation of Lord Dillon. ”

“ The crooked streets and narrow lanes reminded me much of Hanover Street, Ann Street, and other portions of the North End of our American Boston, as I remember that picturesque region in my boyish days. It is not unreasonable to suppose that the local habits and recollections of the first settlers may have had some influence on the physical character of the streets and houses in the New England metropolis; at any rate, here is a similar intricacy of bewildering lanes, and numbers of old peaked and projecting-storied dwellings, such as I used to see there. ”
