James Gregory

“ He was also one of the great leaders in the volunteer movement. The great-great-grandsons, Professor William Gregory and Professor William Pulteney Alison, were professors both of them in the Medical Faculty of the Edinburgh University, and taught their subjects in the lucid and original way, which was the gift of the whole family. Duncan Farquharson Gregory was the only one of the descendants of James Gregorie, the great contemporary of Newton, who followed in his footsteps as a mathematician. ”

“ GREGORY, JAMES (1638–1675) , mathematician, was born at the manse of Drumoak, twelve miles from Aberdeen, in November 1638. His father, the Rev. John Gregory, minister of Drumoak, was fined, deposed, and imprisoned by the covenanters, and died in 1653 (Hew Scott, Fasti Ecclesiæ Scoticanæ, iii. ii. 497) . His maternal grandfather, David Anderson of Finyhaugh, nicknamed ‘Davie-do-a'-thing,’ was said to have constructed the spire of St. Nicholas, and removed ‘Knock Maitland’ from the entrance to the harbour of Aberdeen. ”

“ No two people could be more unlike than those two uncles, who would probably be the guardians of Edward and Bertie Rivers. Mr. Gregory was a tall, portly gentleman, with grey hair and keen eager eyes; his voice was loud, his manner always stern and abrupt. He persuaded Gregory to remain at Nazianzus after his father's death, and to accept the unwelcome charge of the see of Constantinople. Gregory bitterly complained of his unscrupulous importunity, but yielded (Ep. 14, 15) . ”

“ It's there!... Graham, get busy! A contractor; lumber; building materials; carpenters! We build a town as big as Big Pine and we build it faster than ever a town grew before! A store, blacksmith shop, hotel. Shacks of all sorts. Graham!"
Graham, like a man with an electric current shot through him, jumped out of his chair.
"Send a man on the run to Big Pine with a message for Young Gallup! And the message is this: 'Bruce Standing promised to pull your damned town down about your ears ... and the pulling has begun!'"

“ In his final moment, Charles Francis Hamilton stood clothed in conscious power, unshaken in a great faith—triumphant. There was no other word for him then.
“Look!” cried the madman.
But was he mad?
For both Paula and John Sheldon turned and looked—and saw what the old man saw. There in the strange, weird light in the west, clear against the sky, were a great pair of wings flashing like pure beaten gold, as a graceful, speeding body described a long, sweeping curve, seemed for a moment to be dropping below the mountain-tops, then rose, climbing higher and higher. ”

“ There was reason enough for the dread in Paula’s breast; the man was dying!
“Tell me,” said Sheldon softly, “can I do anything for you? Is there any way I can help you?”
The burning eyes narrowed. The old man lifted a shaking hand and pushed the tangled beard away from his lips.
“Curse you!” he panted. “Why are you here?”
“Why, father!” cried Paula. “You told me to bring him!”
“Him?” It was a mutter, deep in the throat, labored and harsh. “You were to get a dotor, girl! This man is a thief, like the others. He comes to steal our fortune from us.” ”

“ Whereupon Mexicali Joe, shaking his head, went away without grumbling; for in the sky of his adoration stood just two: God and Bruce Standing.
Graham was still laughing, when another man rode up to the door, and Graham on the instant became alert and concerned. He hastened to Standing, saying quickly:
"Mr. Deveril to see you. He has ridden his horse nearly to death. And I don't like the look on his face."
"Show him in!" shouted Standing. "You fool ... don't you know he's the one man in the world...." ”

“A jeer!” Gregory exclaimed. “Don’t ever let my father take advantage of you that way, Miss Endacott. He can give me fifteen and owe fifteen and beat me when he feels like it.” ”

“ From Gregory's own hand, and in virtue of his apostolic power, England in its second spring received its division into two provinces, one to be seated at Canterbury, the other at York. His letters to St. Augustine still exist to show how he entered into all the difficulties of the missionary, all the needs of a land in conversion from paganism. From him date the great prerogatives of the see of Canterbury, extending over the whole island, inasmuch as it was the matrix of the Church in England. If sons may deny their father, Englishmen may deny Gregory, and add to schism the guilt of parricide. ”

“ GREGORY, WILLIAM (1766–1840) , Irish under-secretary, was the youngest of three sons of Robert Gregory, a member of a family sprung from an offshoot of the Gregorys of Styvechale Hall, Coventry, who came to Ireland with Cromwell and settled in Tipperary. His father, Robert Gregory (1727–1810) , himself a man of some mark, was chairman of the East India Company for many years till 1783, and member of parliament for Maidstone from 1768 to 1774, and for Rochester from 1774 to 1784 ”

“ The mere weirdness of the affair was the aspect of it which was most clearly visible to Miss Gregory. The lantern made heavy shadows about her. The prostrate woman, but for her harsh breathing, might have been a corpse; the three half-clad men were at once comical and terrible; and, beyond the little area of ground which they were converting into a battle-field she could see the mass of the house, with its upper window yet lighted, the white wall bordering the road, and. the trees. The scene dwarfed the drama and made it ridiculous.

“ There came to him clearly the sound as of some heavy object falling upon bare floor within the cabin.
“There is some one else in there!” he exclaimed impatiently. “Who is it? Why don’t they come out and answer me sensibly if you won’t!”
Positively now there was a quick look of alarm upon her face. For a second he thought that she was going to whisk back into the house. And then she cried hurriedly :
“He is in there—yes. The king! And Napoleon is there and Richard and Johnny Lee. Shall I throw open the door for them to put out their guns and shoot you?”
“Great Heavens!” gasped Sheldon. ”

“ The little thoughtful act of hers had stirred him more deeply than most men are moved even by big things; and the impulse had come to him to go straight to her and thank her. And he was a man who obeyed impulses.
The other men had entered the house for their lunch. It seemed horrible to her that people should be able to eat at a time like this. Wayne Shandon spoke to her again.
"Your father is going to let Jim go with me," he said. "We are going to El Toyon. Then I am going to take him back East."
"East!" she exclaimed,
"Yes. I have a fancy he'd like to be buried close to dad." ”
